Review: Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan
The main character in Dog Whisperer is a Hispanic man named Cesar Millan and the series mostly deals with the rehabilitation of dogs. Cesar typically works with traumatized animals that became aggressive and in many cases are on the brink of euthanasia. However, he usually manages to educate these animals and give them a second chance.
Each episode usually presents the case of two dogs. Most behavioral problems are due to poor education consisting of much love and too little discipline, or due to previous trauma as some of the dogs come from shelters. Even so, we can see how safety and consistency can do wonders even for the most traumatized and aggressive dogs.
As Cesar says at one point, what he does is not necessarily training because he doesn’t teach these animals any tricks, but he offers psychological support and educates them. He always talks with the owners of the animals about the problem, about what caused it, or any previous trauma and then moves to correcting the behavior of the animals.
Some of the tips I already learned from the few episodes I watched so far are never to go straight to petting a dog before he gets more familiar with me; I learned that keeping a safe distance actually makes the animal comfortable enough to want to know you as well as that it is wise to use a soothing voice when addressing a dog so he stays relaxed. Discipline and a well defined hierarchy does not make the animal unhappy. On the contrary, animals really like to know who is the boss and don’t necessarily crave for such a position. If you love and own animals then watching the show and learn how to educate your dog properly.
Verdict:
I gladly recommend this show as it's nice and interesting; it is an absolute must for animal lovers and dog owners in particular as you get to better understand the behavior of these beautiful, loyal animals.
