Review: Brotherhood

Brotherhood is a series that follows the lives of Irish mob members following a trend that brings the Irish mob in the spotlight more and more, following the long period in which the Italian mob was the main focus of genre movies and TV series. The action is centered on the Caffee brothers. One of the brothers is a respected politician and local councilor in Providence, Rhode Island while the other is a member of the local mafia.

Unlike other productions in this genre, here we have the opportunity to see the so called white collar crimes, bribery, trafficking political influence and assigning contracts based on anything but competence.

Brotherhood is created for Showtime so you can expect a high quality camera work and acting. This production is obviously Showtime’s attempt to rival HBO series, and they do a pretty good job. One can easily see this series rise to the status of The Wire and other similar productions.

However, Brotherhood lacks in charismatic characters. There is no Nucky Thompson type of mobster and the series would surely benefit from a strong figure be it good or evil. Although there not being a main positive character could be considered a plus, the fact that there’s not even a strong bad character places the whole cast in a somewhat grey area that slowly makes the series boring.

If you enjoy series such as The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and generally speaking action mafia related series, Brotherhood is a must see. The series is pretty much addressed to genre enthusiasts but action series seekers as well may find it entertaining.
