Review: Awake
Awake immediately strikes you as an original TV series as the main character wakes up every morning in an alternative reality. After being involved in a serious car accident together with his wife and their teenage son, detective Michael Britten wakes up to learn that his wife didn't survive the accident. However, the next day he wakes up in a kind of parallel reality where his wife survives, but their son doesn't make it. Michael embraces this alternating reality enthusiastically because it seems to be the only way that he can enjoy both his wife and his son even though not both of them at the same time.
As soon as Michael closes his eyes he actually wakes up in the alternate universe where he has to go to work, has sessions with a therapist and goes about daily activities. In both universes, the therapists assure Michael that he suffers from a form of alienation and that the other life is just an illusion. However, there is no way for Michael to be sure which one of these two existences is just a creation of his mind, so he simply goes with both of them. Even the therapists have no explanation for this highly complex fabrication of his subconscious, and they hardly can convince him that one of these two universes is real and the other one just an illusion.
However appealing this parallel universe theme of the series might be, Awake is still a cop series and Michael is a detective that solves crimes so fans of action crime shows will enjoy it the most. What's more, Michael has to go to work in both his universes, and when certain cases seem to intertwine in both his existences things start to get interesting. Without spoiling it too much for you, I can say that even Michael's car accident is not what it seems and the fact that he lives this double life allows him to find out some things that he otherwise had no way of learning.
Verdict:
Solid acting (especially Jason Isaacs as Michael Britten) and a highly engaging script, at least for a crime drama series, make Awake a top drawer TV series. Crime and fantasy TV series fans should get hold of the show right away.
