Introduction
Google TV is becoming quite popular so Sony has revised its hardware to accommodate Google TV users with their NSZ-GS7, otherwise known as Sony Internet Player with Google TV. With prices starting at $200, this device might be excellent for users who wish to make their television Internet enabled without replacing the television altogether.
Product Overview
The Sony Internet Player with Google TV is very small like most Internet streaming media players. It includes HDMI, Ethernet, two USB ports and integrated WiFi. Like most of the Sony’s products, this device is also a high-quality. Unlike many Internet streaming media players, the Sony Internet Player with Google TV comes with 8 GB of internal memory and FTP access. This device supports HD output for viewing needed television content and the device will work just fine with your television alone. However, it is also possible to hook up the next box through a blue Ray player or cable box also. But it can also be connected through audio and video with HDMI.
Remote Control
We also found the remote control with this device to be more than adequate. In fact, we must admit we like it. The remote control is Bluetooth enabled and runs from standard batteries. But what we loved about the remote control most is the touchpad. Much like the touchpad provided with laptops, the remote control has ability to use tap to click and drag to scroll. Remote controls can be adjusted through settings and there is a light located underneath the keyboard that is connected; we were also pleased with the keyboard that comes with this device. One funny thing we noticed about the keyboard is some of the locations of the key. For instance, exclamation and question mark are located on the same key, which makes very little sense but the Remote control works seamlessly with the keyboard. Users will notice the backlight of the keyboard turn on as a remote control is picked up and off as it is put down. There is a sensor that activates the backlight that Sony intends to use on a later date for game play.
Although the remote control uses touch technology, there are hard buttons available for d-pad, input selection, home, guide, DVR and others. Additionally, users will find the volume, channel, and mute controls located on the side of the remote control. This makes it easier for users to locate frequently used functions of the remote control without ever having to look at it. Furthermore, this remote control has the ability to be programmed as a universal remote control that can be used on other devices. Because of all remote control features, the quality of the remote control is one of the higher selling points of the Sony Internet Player with Google TV. Additionally, remote control applications for Android and Apple devices are also supported with Sony Internet Player with Google TV.
Included software
The Sony Internet Player with Google TV is already loaded with Google TV 3.2 and of course the Sony entertainment network is also preloaded with this device. However, this Sony device includes software features that aren’t provided in all Google TV devices. For instance, picture size can be changed to accommodate the size of the users television screen. Additionally, other software features include screensavers and text to speech software. And of course, this device includes all new software to configure remote control and hardware.
Verdict
Sony has done an excellent job of updating their hardware to accommodate Google TV. Unfortunately, users will not find the same support for other Internet video subscription services that can be found on other Internet multimedia streamers. Although accessing these services is possible, the main purpose of this device is to be used with Google TV. At $200 in price, this is one of the more affordable devices that can be used with Google TV. However, in terms of Internet media streaming players, this device is a little more expensive.
The remote control is the best on the market. However, if you are a user who prefers Internet video subscriptions such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Prime, it may be in your best interest to choose a more affordable Internet media streaming player. But if you are a big fan of Google TV, this is a device for you. Furthermore, the Sony Internet Player with Google TV will come equipped with software not available on other Internet media streamers. But to be honest, we are not sure the included software features and the amazing remote control is enough to sell us on this $200 price tag. Especially since there are many available Internet media streamers can choose from. We are not saying this device is not easy to use, easy to set, and of excellent quality. It is all of those things. However, if price is a factor there are other Internet multimedia streamers available.
