Boxee Overview of software and hardware

Boxee is a software application for running a media center, much like XBMC does on a PC creating a HTPC Home Theter PC). In fact it is based on that very same software. The D-Link Boxee Box is the most well known hardware that runs the Boxee software and was developed by the creators of the software.

The Boxee software can be run on a number of different platforms (Windows, Mac OS, Apple TV, and Linux are supported), but is more heavily focused on social media and sharing content. The software (just like XBMC) will scrape your media content and grab cover artwork, descriptions, cast, reviews etc. It can run a number of streaming services such as Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, and Vimeo.

The Boxee box is DVR based with a monthly subscription and all content being streamed from the cloud. The device has no hard drive and the developers are no longer releasing third party apps for the software. This makes Boxee a less attractive proposition for most people than XBMC.

The boxes is just a more restrictive version of XBMC. Without the third party add one and repositories. The boxes TV box costs $15 per month to use a virtual DVR. I'm struggling to see why anyone would use it?
