TV Show Community to Premiere on March 17 on Yahoo Screen

Community, the popular TV serial with a cult-like following, was picked by Yahoo Screen last year after it was cancelled by NBC. At the time, a time frame for the sixth season was announced as a vague “see you in the fall”.TV Show CommunityA premiere date for the anticipated series has been set for March 17, which will see the release of two episodes.

The 13-episode season will release one new episode every Tuesday after the premiere date.

The premiere of Community is a big step by Yahoo to take on digital streaming services like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. Streaming companies have now started airing original series’ which have brought in a rush of new subscribers.

Netflix and Amazon, both won Golden Globe awards on Sunday for an original series.

Woody Allen, has also signed to make his first-ever television series with Amazon this Tuesday.

The TV Show, Community, revolves around a band of misfits at a community college. The cast includes Joel McHale and Alison Brie.

“It’s the best show of all viewed on anything. I’m not going to say ‘television,’ because it’s not on television,” said McHale, in a video announcing the premiere date. “You know why? It’s better than television.”

Google Search Share Goes Down and Yahoo Upwards – Still Wide Gap To Number One Spot

According to an independent analytics firm, Google has reached its lowest share of the US internet search market since 2008. Yahoo! on the other hand has reached its highest share in 5 years.

Internet search marketIn December, StatCounter reported that Google handled 75.2 per cent of US online search referrals. Ever since the analytics firm started tracking data more than six years ago, Google has slipped to its lowest record. A year before, the giant tech company handled 79.3 percent.

Despite a slight decrease in market share, Google remains a leader in the US Internet search market by a wide margin. It is followed by Bing from Microsoft at 12.5 percent and Yahoo! at 10.4 percent. The formers’ highest share since 2009.

A year before, Yahoo handled only 7.4 percent of the search market. Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, has constantly reminded others that the tech company is devoted to the search market it helped pioneer. The market was eventually dominated by Google.

The changes in Yahoo’s share can be attributed to a deal made between the company and Mozilla to make Yahoo the default search engine in Mozilla’s Firefox browser. It replaced Google which was the previous default search engine in the browser developed in 2004.

Between November and December of last year, Statcounter reports a drop of 2 percent in Google’s search share.

“The move by Mozilla has had a definite impact on US search,” StatCounter chief executive officer Aodhan Cullen said. “The question now is whether Firefox users switch back to Google.”

According to StatCounter, Firefox accounts for more than 12 percent of US internet usage for the month of December.

Community Creator Dan Harmon Claims Yahoo Will Not Change Show

The popular comedy series Community was surprisingly dropped by host network NBC this summer, but to the relief of fans was quickly picked up by search engine giants Yahoo (through their Yahoo! Screen brand), and to even greater relief, creator Dan Harmon has recently stated that the move into an online-only realm will not change how the show is produced.

community_yahoo_screenTaken on for a total of 13 new episodes in its 6th season, Community has already lost series regular Yvette Nichole Brown for personal reasons (but citing she is able to return as a guest star), but claim that viewers will not see any other major changes, with Yahoo Screen to continue the show’s traditional ‘three-act format’.

Harmon (Rick & Morty), promoting his upcoming documentary Harmontown, was speaking to Vulture as he said of the matter: “I think that the act breaks from the original Community, as it was born into the NBC clock, are very good act breaks. It’s a three-act story as raised at NBC. The [online] commercial breaks are coming at points in a story where, if you were watching a 20-minute play, the curtain might come down, and you might have an opportunity to go get a box of Twizzlers and think about what’s happening, digest, and speak to your friends about what’s going on.

“I like those act breaks; I like where they are, and Yahoo’s intended clock sounds like it’s perfectly compatible with those same spots. So we are breaking three-act stories in the room. My intention also is to keep the same runtime because that will make for the same pacing and the same tone.”

He added of the show in general and how it has managed to take a place in the hearts of its fans: “I think I realised that what was special about Community is the actors. I’ve written lots of scripts almost as good or just as good as the Community pilot. The big difference is Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs. That’s what TV is, you know. I’m sure Chuck Lorre would say the same thing about Sheldon. Ultimately, there’s nothing particularly magical about what we do as writers and showrunners; the best we can do is know what we’re doing.

“We can’t really bring any amount of magic to the final product that the actors can. They’re the heads in the box. We have seen lots and lots of very well-written things without people that we liked in them, and we’ve hated them, and we don’t even remember them. On the other hand, we tolerate lots of very poorly written stuff because we love the people. We watch Wheel of Fortune because of Pat Sajak’s head! We love that guy.”

Set to air on Yahoo Screen in early 2015 (presumably on Yahoo’s preferred traditional method of release than Netflix’s ‘all the season at once’ approach), will Community manage to keep their current structure and fanbase with their new online-only limitations? It’s clear that the creator cares, but he should be called out when he gets a little too gushing (like the first sentence of his second statement):

Though it shouldn’t matter so much considering he was once fired from his own show, and while he is back there now, he also has other work:

Community Directors Declare Yahoo “Fantastic”, and Nielsen “Archaic”

The cult sitcom Community will be hoping to at the very least stay that way after its transfer from NBC to Yahoo! Screen, but the unorthodox move following the network’s decision to drop them after 5 seasons has been declared a “fantastic” choice by the show’s directors.

community_castJoe Russo, who brings the comedy to life with his brother Anthony (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), claimed that Yahoo! will be a good home for the series in spite of the search engine specialists being untested with a show of this size.

The 6th season of the series is expected to have exclusively online premieres for new episodes starting either ‘late 2014′ or ‘early 2015′, with the first of the new episodes to start filming “…in the middle of November,” according to the duo.

Speaking to Collider, they said of the changes and of the ‘archaic’ network system that they no longer have to conform to: “We love [having moved to Yahoo] – it’s a show that won’t die. Community is one of those shows that’s garnered an incredible amount of press, but maybe has a cap on its network television audience. So when you take it and put it on a space like Yahoo!, it still gets the same amount of press it’s been getting, but it doesn’t have to worry about hitting those Nielsen rating numbers anymore, which are archaic and ten years past their use.”

Joe added with regards to fulfilling a long-standing ‘six seasons and a movie’ goal for the show: “I can’t say it’s in the works because I don’t know. But my guess is you’ll hear soon about a Community movie.”

Community’s lead actor Joel McHale had spoken to Digital Spy in July over such prospects, stating: “My only stipulation with the movie would be that it has to be epic. It can’t be like [another] episode, it has to be big. If we’re gonna have a movie, it’s gotta knock your socks off.”

Ahead of their biggest change of scene since first launching in 2009, will Community be able to prove any doubters wrong and help elevate another website to network-levels of recognition as content hosts?

Yahoo Home Of Revived Community

The well-known NBC comedy Community, as of earlier this year no longer of NBC, have revealed the first trailer of their new era… to be aired exclusively by internet search engine specialists Yahoo, via their Yahoo! Screen division.

community_pileThe 13-episode sixth season of the popular format, set to air from early 2015 (retaining creator Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty) the main cast of actors including Joel McHale, Yvette Nichole Brown, Gillian Jacobs, and Ken Jeong), was previewed also exclusively through the website, with a trailer that looks back on some key moments at ‘Greendale Community College’ from the past five seasons, continuing their trend of parody previews.

These highlights show before the screen flatlines, indicating an NBC cancellation. Then invoking the spirit of a number of sci-fi classics for its reemergence, an announcer said of the launch on Yahoo: “We have the ability to make the world’s first bionic show. Community will be that show. Better than it was before. Better. Stronger. Faster. Ratings? Where we’re going, we don’t need ratings!”

Whilst the cast and crew behind the show are planning to use this continuation of their innovative web-based experiments to springboard them towards an end goal of ‘six seasons and a movie’, will Yahoo want more from their new lucrative content rights? Or alternatively, why would they not want to give Ken Jeong more airtime:

Community Movie On The Way Hints Sony President

Community fans who are already in the throes of Ecstasy after the show was saved by Yahoo, can get a little more excited after it was revealed that a Community movie is very likely too.

Community-TV-ShowThe news came from the president of programming and production Sony Pictures Television. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Zack Van Amburg was answering a question about a seventh season when he replied, “I don’t know, let’s see how our movie does! Isn’t that our plan? There’s no way we’re not making the movie now! I think once we make the movie, let’s look up and decide how much more Community the world wants. We promised six seasons and a movie, how much more do you want?”

He continued saying,  “I’d be lying if I told you that we have not had some very early and preliminary conversations that are very exciting about what a potential movie could be and who might direct it. It’s early but it’s completely in our thought process.”

He also discussed the sequence of events that rescued the show from oblivion. After being cancelled by NBC, Sony fought for the show and persisted with asking NBC to think again. When NBC President Bob Greenblatt had finally had enough, he allegedly said, “‘Stop f***ing calling me about Community!’”

That is when Sony turned to the online streaming options available and contacted both Hulu and Comedy Central. Hulu took up more of an interest and discussions were in an advanced stage when Yahoo contacted Sony about saving the show.

Sony made their excuses to Yahoo, thinking that Hulu would be taking on the show, however when that fell through, they re-approached Yahoo and the rest is history.

Amburg said that the offer from Yahoo to save the show for streaming on Yahoo Screen, would help to raise the profile of the service. He also said that the production budget will be kept the same as the broadcast version.
