Cord Cutting Basics: Making the Transition from Cable to Online Streaming Videos 2015

The future is now! Internet-delivered TV is here and there’s no stopping it. Back in the day prognosticating pundits didn’t expect the mega success of internet TV (just ask Netflix after they aired Daredevil Season 1), but now companies like HBO, Nickelodeon, Dish Network and CBS are looking to open up shop in this market. TV channels that showcased great events were once jealously fought over by cable networks; however, with the advent of internet TV, they’ve been set free, so to speak. This time there are no expensive equipment rentals, subscription plans and nightmare-ish customer service. Just pure entertainment and just the way you like it.

Cord cutting - Cutting the cable to the traditional cable companies Just a word of caution first though, don’t rush it. A lot of people who had not thought about their decisions well, end up with disappointments; so do yourself a favor and research about cord-cutting and the internet before you make the transition. There are two ways to do things: the easy way and the hard way, and believe me you will want to do things the easy way.

TiVo introduces OnePass – Organising your Internet TV Streaming Experience for You

TiVo like other electronic companies at CES 2015 made an exciting announcement: TiVo OnePass. This doesn’t involve any hardware, but is rather a new feature to be pushed to certain TiVo DVRs targeting binge-watchers.

TiVo Launces onepassOnePass will be arriving some time next month to applicable users. It is aimed to those who watch serveral episodes back-to-back and don’t like to search for that one wayward episode in between.

TiVo users can use the TiVo OnePass to locate all episodes of the show they wish to watch in the My Shows folder, arranged neatly season-wise.

If the episode is not recorded by the user, TiVo will enable services of other streaming networks to fill in the episode gaps. These include Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Instant Video. Users have the option to follow through with recordings only or to stick to streaming.

They will simply expand your Internet TV Streaming experience within their own service.

OnePass features includes:

  • – Select recording or streaming of your content, you may save the content on your local disk, or you can stream your whole experience, or both.
  • – Across all your TiVO platforms and apps you can include all seasons for a TV show, start with only one season, or only include new unwatched episodes.
  • – Organising all your streaming and recorded video under a “My Shows” section, in directories after the name of the show.
  • – Remembering your last watched episode and bookmarking the next so you don’t have to remember where you are when you are breaking from your binge watching.

TiVo plans to push its plans out in February to its Roamio and Mini users. Those using the TiVo apps on their smartphones and tablets will also be able to utilize the feature. iOS users will get it first in February, followed by Android users receiving the feature in March.

Netflix Restricts VPN users – In An Attempt to limit the Out-of-Region Viewership

VPN services are used by a number of users world wide, for different usages.
Some are on vacation, and want to be able to reach local resources, some are business users accessing their employers internal network, or simply accessing content on internet streaming services such as Hulu or Netflix to stream content not accessible if they are not located in a specific country.

Netflix restricts VPN usersWhile some of these usages are for leisure, some also use it for privacy concerns, due to their country’s restrictions of Internet usage or other reasons.

The video streaming services offered by Netflix are geographically restricted according to which countries the studios make the videos available to.

To bypass these restrictions entire online services have been set up. A service in New Zealand is built entirely around providing a way around it and letting citizens of other nations access to Netflix’s streaming TV catalogue.

Unofficial solutions on the web may no longer be available. According to torrentfreak, VPN operators claim that users can no longer access Netflix through technological loopholes.

The change does not appear to have affected all accounts, but those which had multiple simultaneous sign-ins being used for circumvention. This has come as a surprise to users having unrestricted access to the service outside of its listed countries.

When Netflix was reached by tech blog Engadget, they denied putting up any blocks and that there has been “no change” in handling of VPNs.
There are also reports about regular users, using VPN services within their own country, being affected by the “VPN Pirate stoppage”.
Users using VPN might be doing so out of privacy concerns, so there might not always be foul-play because a VPN service is used.

As Torrentfreak notes, Netflix may have been pushed by TV and movie producers to stop “VPN-pirates”, which they believe are robbing them of their livelihood. Putting a stop to out-of-region content viewing may be a step from Netflix to maintain deals with Media companies.
Which shows how far away the current copyrighters are from the actual users.

Have you been affected by the blockage?

The Upcoming Streaming Battle In The Land Down Under: A Look into Netflix’s Prospects in Australia

Come March 2015, Australia’s cut throat competitive streaming market will have one more competitor – a big one at that. Netflix, one of the world’s largest and most popular Internet streaming brands, announced earlier this month that the company plans to launch an Australian division in the first quarter of 2015.

Netflix to launch in AustraliaConsidering the current status quo in the country’s local streaming market, it goes without saying that the brand name alone won’t guarantee success for Netflix. The whole issue can be best analyzed by dissecting it into two distinct factors that are likely to seal the fate for the company in the long run: price and content availability.

As of now, Netflix is yet to announce anything concrete as far as the price and platform availability goes. One undeniable advantage the company currently enjoys is that it has apps for virtually every platform imaginable – from Nintendo’s Wii to Apple’s iOS and what not! So, naturally the company will want to exploit that to attract as many customers as realistically possible.

ABC’s canceled Selfie heads to Hulu

The canceled TV show Selfie has found a new home on streaming powerhouse Hulu.

Emily Kapnek, Selfie‘s creator and show-runner, announced on Monday that the remaining six unaired episodes will be available for streaming on Hulu.

Selfie TV show coffee timeThe Warner Bros. Television comedy was canceled in November, with its seventh episode last broadcasting on the 11th. The show starred Karen Gillan and John Cho.

Kapnek took to twitter to inform fans that the first of the six unaired episodes will be released on Tuesday on Hulu, Hulu Plus and ABC.com. For the next five weeks, the remaining episodes will release, one for every week.

Selfie and Manhattan Love Story were part of an hour-long spot of romantic comedies on ABC. Both were cancelled with the latter being axed first.

Selfie opened up to a mediocre 5.3 million viewers and a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49. In the weeks that followed, the series failed to keep the attention of its few viewers, whose number shed by the week.

After Manhattan Love Story got the ax, ABC gave Selfie a bigger shot and  doubled its originals on election night.

Hulu has been known for picking up unaired episodes of an ABC cancelled series before. In April 2013, Hulu gave James Van Der Beek and Krysten Ritter’s Apartment 23 a new home.
