Stephen King’s Dark Tower Set for Film and TV

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower film has been floating around development hell for quite some time, but it seems there might actually be light at the end of the tunnel. It has been announced that Sony and MRC are teaming up to bring the much loved fantasy series to not just film, but television as well. The plans include bringing the books to the silver screen in a film series as well as a complimentary TV show to accompany the movies.

The dark tower - From Stephen KingThe Dark Tower series is a series of book by famous horror writer Stephen King, the book blends multiple genres in what King himself describes as his finest work. It combines fantasy, science fiction, horror and Western in a series that follows a ‘gunslinger’ on his quest towards a tower. The series comprises of eight novels focussing on the protagonist Roland Deschain, a character King has revealed to be majorly influenced by Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name” from Sergio Leone’s acclaimed Western ‘Dollar’ trilogy. Other inspirations for the series have come from J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings’ vast fictional world, as well as Arthurian legend.

Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Erica Huggins and Akiva Goldsman are set to produce, who have collectively tried to get the project up and running for almost 10 years. The first film will be based on the very first novel, The Gunslinger, which was written back in 1982. Akiva Goldsman has been joined by Jeff Pinkner to co-write the script, and will be a completely different version to what has previously been written. Now all that is left is for a director to be bought onboard and production can begin.

The Dark Tower adaptations have been in the works for quite some time, but due to the sheer scope and size of the world in which the Gunslinger exists, potential budgets have been far too big for studios to take a risk on. Even though the books themselves have received critical acclaim, studios are reluctant in taking on a project of this scale without assurances that it will succeed. The project went through two major studios before landing with MRC and Sony. Universal Studios picked up the property back in 2007 and initially announced JJ Abrams was connected to direct a trilogy but soon removed himself from the project. Universal eventually pulled the plug after budget issues and a contract breakdown with director Ron Howard. Dark Tower then jumped ship over to Warner Bros. but again due to financial concerns, they also passed.

Stephen King himself is excited that his series has finally been given the greenlight as he recently stated that having Akiva Goldsman Jeff Pinkner onboard to write the adaptations is a brilliant and creative approach to his books. The Dark Tower will be the latest Stephen King novel to receive the silver screen treatment, which comes after countless critically acclaimed and successful film versions of his books have been released over the years. Such films include The Shawshank Redemption, It, The Green Mile, The Shining, Stand By Me and Carrie have all been hugely successful.

The Dark Tower has no release date for now, but after a decade of sitting in development hell, there finally seems to be some hope for the Gunslinger to make his way to television and the big screen.

Good bye Google TV – Discontinued in Favor of Android TV – CES 2015

Google TV has failed to take off as expected when it launched in 2010. Issues such as poor customization options, laggy apps and disappointed customers have led Google to discontinue the product. It’s developer tools and libraries will also no longer be supported and unavailable.

Google TV to be discontinuedGoogle TV had been successful to an extent in gaining developer support. It incorporated Chrome and Android features in a 10-foot interface and a QWERTY remote which allowed users to use games, apps and play online video content.

“While the Google TV libraries will no longer be available, we’ve made it really easy to transition apps to Android TV using familiar Android development tools, as well as our new Leanback support libraries,” said Google and Android TV teams.

Android TV was announced only last year, showcased on the Nexus Player set-top box by Google. This week at CES 2015, Sony announced that all of its Bravia TVs will be featuring Android TV. More companies will be partnering with Google to bring Android TV devices. Google has already identified Sony, Sharp and Philips among them.

“We expect to see an exciting lineup of Android TV devices in the coming year, including TVs from Sony, Sharp, and Philips, as well as other set-top and over-the-top boxes,” added the teams.

Favourable reports have been coming in from CES 2015 in Las Vegas that the Android TV hardware has been featured on several TV manufacturers. Sony, Sharp and TP Vision have expressed support for Android TV. Support for the platform has also been confirmed by chip makers including Qualcomm, Nvidia, MediaTek, Intel, Broadcom and ARM.

Bugs may still appear sporadically on the Android TV, but there is little doubt that it is still far superior to the discontinued Google TV. It’s better hardware features make that possible alongside its simplicity and newer software to make Internet TV streaming advance even further.

Other manufacturers like Huawei and Razer have also expressed willingness to support the product.

The Walkman Is Back – Sony Introduces The Walkman ZX2 at CES 2015

Sony has unveiled a new model of its classic walkman series at the Consumer Electronics Show 2015. In the past year, many had speculated that Sony would be revising the Walkman.

The Walkman is Back from SonyThe new Walkman ZX2 is priced at a whooping $1200. It was designed keeping high-end audiophiles in mind. As Sony says, this is “the fruit of continuous refinement in high audio quality technologies.”

The device supports high resolution audio playback and is packed with WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC for wireless streaming and connections to wireless speakers and headphones.

Many have fallen for the new design which resembles a smartphone having a matte black casing. The playback buttons are placed on a curved side, which is quite convenient for finger placement when holding the device.

Featuring a touchscreen, the Android-powered device supports Android apps which can be downloaded from the App Store. Android Jellybean 4.2 is run on the device which is two years old.

The reason for its hefty price tag is its S-Master HX processor. It enables high-resolution audio, but requires high-resolution audio supported headphones or speakers.

A variety of audio formats are supported by the ZX2 including DSD, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, Apple Lossless and much more.

Last year’s Walkman, the NZW, had an 8-hour battery life and was waterproof. The ZX2 however has an impressive 60 hours music playback time of battery life. It has an internal memory of 128 GB and a microSD slot for extra storage.

Sony has not yet made clear when and where the new Walkman will be available for sale.

Sony Rumored To Be Launching A New 12.9 Inch Sony Xperia Tablet In 2015

The latest rumor about Sony Corporation is about its plans to launch a 12.9-inch tablet PC in the first quarter of 2015. Rumor has it that Sony’s new tablet PC device is comparable to the Apple iPad Pro.

Sony Xperia Z4 Ultra in the WorksThis new 13-inch tablet PC will be Sony’s biggest Android tablet ever. The tech industry conglomerate seems to be stepping up to compete with companies such as Apple Inc and Samsung. While Apple is gearing up for the release of its 12.2-inch iPad Pro, which is expected to be sometime in 2015, Sony is preparing to give the iPad creator a run for its money.

This new Sony tablet PC is suspected to be sporting an LCD display size of 12.9-inches, a 3840 x 2400 pixels resolution, and will be bigger than both the largest Samsung Galaxy Pro tablet PC and Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 laptop/tablet hybrid. Sony’s newest tablet has supposedly been branded as the Sony Xperia Z4 Ultra. It’s 8.6mm thick with 6GB of RAM and it runs on a Qualcomm octa-core 64 bit processor.

The new Sony Xperia Z4 Ultra will also be featuring an 8MP camera and an HDMI output port. The internal storage size will be 64GB and it will also have Playstation 4 Remote playability. The price for this new Xperia Z3 Ultra tablet is said to be more than $1000 which puts it on the higher end segment of the industry’s market.

Pegatron, the company that builds surface hybrids for Microsoft and iPads for Apple, will be mass-producing the new Sony tablet PC, which only further confirms the company’s intent to compete with Apple’s soon-to-be-released iPad Pro, which has only 2GB RAM, an A8X processor and an LCD screen size of 12.2-inches.

Ever since the company’s 136 billion yen loss back at the end of the 2014 fiscal year, Sony completely ceased its production of laptop PCs. However, sources have reported that the electronics giant plans to pursue what it calls an “aggressive strategy” towards manufacturing tablet PCs as it heads into the year 2015.
