Technology Giants Chill In Viral Ice Bucket Charity Campaign

The online world has been home to many crazes over recent years, with people indulging in crazy tasks such as planking, fall-ing, Tebow-ing, milk-ing, and cinnamon challenge-ing, but it appears as though nothing is going to compare in sheer video numbers to the newest one, ice bucket-ing.

ice_bucket_celebrities_nbcFortunately, though, it is not in with the others as merely a fun and unique pastime, but has taken on a means of promoting awareness and raising money in America for the ALS Association, aiding the cause of fighting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurodegenerative disease better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, after the famed baseball player of the 1930’s.

Taking off in mid-July through a a social media web, the past week has really seen the challenge come to the fore, with many celebrities (pictured) and technology personalities taking part. With the unofficial rules stating that a participant may challenge up to 3 more people to pour a bucket of ice water over their heads within 24 hours (otherwise they ‘must’ pay $100 to the ALS Association), it is one that could go on a while.

Notable celebrity participants include Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, Oprah Winfrey, and Weird Al Yankovic (who called out “Barack Obama, the Dali Lama, and the Pope” as his nominees), whilst the celebrities of the technology industry have included Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Tim Cook, and Reed Hastings, though it was the Microsoft man who made the most notable mark with a string-pulled bucket tipper, creating one of the biggest videos in the genre to date with over 5 million views.

To show all of these clips in a pile would be using up bandwidth, so below is a compliation that the internet has thrown together of the best ALS Ice Bucket Challenges so far:

Why Does Justin Bieber Get So Much Attention?

Never since the old days of Baby Face Nelson, John Dillinger, and Bonnie and Clyde has one person had so much media attention focused on his somewhat criminal activities than Justin Bieber.

Justin-BieberBieber is all over the place in the news as his personal life continues to be exposed through his bad boy antics and run ins with the law.  Bieber is wanted in two or three countries including his native Canada for misbehaving ranging from pranks to the supposed use of drugs and alcohol.

Fans around the world are supporting the Beebs and his notoriety couldn’t have been any higher.  This boosts his social networking presence and online streaming power. Fans take videos of him and upload them to sites like YouTube and Facebook adding to the footage of the news services.

Bieber is a multi-millionaire estimated at having over $100 million in assets and those are invested for him so he’ll never run out of money.  This attracts the attention of the media and no matter what he does he’ll continue to be the target of news stories probably for the rest of his life.  This all ads to the social networking popularity and more.  As new streaming technology emerges it’s a good bet that Bieber will be in the forefront.

Such celebrity exposure is a huge money maker so it’s not going to stop soon.  Bieber knows this and other celebrities like Miley Cyrus do to.  They sell those newspapers, tabloids, and on air time as well as boost traffic to websites, blogs, message boards, and social media.  Given all that good money and traffic this is case where bad means good big time.

Fans Love Access To Stars That Streaming Gives

The amount of content streaming on the web is incalculable. But excitingly this is the first time in history, where fans of a musician, performer in film, or anyone in the arts or sports, or any walk of life can find their favorites in abundance online.

CelebritiesFans are the lifeblood of a public figure.  People with mega amounts of fans like Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus don’t ever have to work again.  Appeasing their fan-base is easy as cameras and recorders are trained on these celebs 24/7.  Sports stars also live due to their fans. Teams and players and coaches have to chat it up with the fans or risk losing them and that means lost revenue.

With the use of message boards, social networking and more, fans can meet up and share data on their favorites and boost sales and exposure to that celeb, event, or even a car.  It’s totally insane that some websites have fan-bases dedicated to certain models of cars.  More than some big shot celebrities!

Fan parties are even bigger now.  Fans can schedule get togethers in a flash such as in ‘flash mobs’ and so on and show up and dance and laugh, eat and party all dedicated to their favorites.

It just doesn’t end and it looks like it’s going to keep growing.  Corporations need to take heed of this as some fan sites are so huge that they generate the revenue of a good size corporation.  Getting that revenue and viewership is essential.

The web is proving that fans rule.  Make a mistake and fans will tear you apart on millions of websites, blogs, boards, and throughout social media.  It behooves celebs, teams, networks, and whomever is in the public eye to keep up their fan-base, it can cure you or kick your butt.

Justin Bieber Sitcom Prepared By ABC

He appears to be a lot more tolerable to the non-‘screaming teenage girl’ demographic than he was just a year or two ago, but Canadian-born pop singer Justin Bieber could be set to annoy once again, with reports suggesting that American network television is set to create a sitcom about him.

justin_bieber_abc_sitcomThankfully for most people’s sanity it won’t be starring the singer in an acting role (a transition which does not work out too often), though the 18-year-old is to serve as an executive producer on the proposed ABC series alongside his manager Scooter Braun, with writing coming from Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert (Entourage).

The reported plot of the comedy, while not specifically mentioning Bieber, is said to be based on ‘the teenage years and family life of a future pop star’, and would undoubtedly be drawing on at least some ‘personal experiences’. Planned for the ‘next television season’, the series would join other dedicated TV projects which the musician has featured in, including reality show Punk’d, documentary Justin Bieber: All Around the World, and a guest star performance on CBS crime drama CSI, which was critically acclaimed as not being the train-wreck that the same critics predicted it to be beforehand.

While he shot to fame in 2009 partially due to his record-breaking music video on YouTube, that record has since been surpassed, so will he be able to fill a void by bringing in TV ratings for ABC?

Really, though, if an international singer’s rise to global fame with a music video on YouTube is all it takes… then why hasn’t Psy got his own American ‘life story sitcom’ yet?

VEVO Reveal True Cost Of Legal Music Royalties

Music video website (and popular YouTube music video brand) VEVO have revealed the cost of their involvement in showing the latest hits in a legal manner, revealing that they have paid over $200 million to ‘artists and labels’ through royalties since starting the joint venture site in 2009.

The video-streaming site, co-owned by Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Abu Dhabi Media, is responsible for broadcasting the official videos of new songs published by Sony, Universal, and EMI, and presumably only pay the latter (who licence their songs to Vevo) any significant label payments.

The high costs over the past 3 years are naturally stemming from it being one of the most popular sources of music videos online with significant advertising income on their clips, but note that in 2012 they have paid to stars and labels than in 2010 & 2011 combined.

Speaking at the Business Insider: IGNITION Conference in New York City (USA), Vevo’s CEO Rio Caraeff said of the site and its advertising policies: “The audience that loves music should be treated and valued the same way as the audience that loves the Super Bowl, and revenue should flow as such.”

The service, available through a range of platforms including their own browser site, YouTube, Facebook, Xbox 360, Last.fm, and a range of portable device apps, count YouTube viewing figures as their total view count, led by their highest-rated official video “Baby” (by Justin Bieber) on 806 million total views, but still publish an overall YouTube ranking for music videos as a whole, a list currently led by viral sensation (and now the all-time most popular YouTube video) “Gangnam Style” (Psy) on over 845m hits.

For videos that are promoted through the popular Vevo brand, though, the royalty cost statistics serve as an example as to just why many pirate websites look to lay low and avoid such issues, especially when the ‘free trial’ argument can be considered, but with current rates seemingly climbing, will VEVO be left to pay its featured talent even higher amounts over the next few years?

Bieber Fever Comes To ‘Simpsons’ Springfield This Season

Love him or hate him, Justin Bieber is getting a bit more two-dimensional later this fall. The popular singer and scribe of pop hits like “Boyfriend” and “Baby”” will be appearing in a cameo in an episode of the upcoming “Simpsons” season this fall. The news broke Tuesday, via Bieber’s Twitter account–however the Tweet was then deleted.

“Just did a voice over for the SIMPSONS!!! #swaggy,” read the now deleted Tweet from Bieber.

Fox confirmed on Wednesday via a statement that Bieber would indeed be appearing on the hit animated series. While no firm details have been revealed, Al Jean, an executive producer for the show stated that Bieber will appear as himself and attempt to enter into a talent show that Bart will also be taking part in.

“He tries to get into a talent show that Bart is playing piano in and they won’t admit him,” said Jean. “Draw your own conclusions.” The producer also pointed out that the appearance is a cameo only, and won’t be an integral part of the episode. “”It’s a cameo,” Jean said. He then continued to say, “but all of his fans should watch every minute of the show, before and after he’s on.”

“The Simpsons” begin their 24th season on September 20th, however, Bieber’s episode won’t likely air until after the first of the year.

Other celebrities expected to make cameo appearances in the 24th season of the popular series are Natalie Portman, Edward Norton, Anne Hathaway, and even Steve Carell. It’s safe to say that Bieber Fever will be hitting Springfield soon enough.
