Ericsson and Qualcomm Prep LTE-U (LTE Unlicensed) For Use On Various Networks

After the LTE-U (LTE-Unlicensed) demonstration by Ericsson and Qualcomm proved that the technology works, vendor and operating partners T-Mobile, SK Telecom and Verizon, are all preparing for its 2015 4th quarter deployment.

LTE-U coming to townEricsson and Qualcomm have given LTE-U or a new name: LAA (Licensed Assisted Access). It refers to the usage of LTE technology in unlicensed 5GHz spectrum bands. Ericsson considers LTE-U to be a vital piece in the 5G standards, which are still under development, because of the aggregation of licensed and unlicensed spectrum bands. Also, n small cell architectures, it uses higher frequencies.

Alongside Qualcomm, vendor Ericsson has broken ground with the technology and together they have proven it can reach speeds of 450 Mbits by combining the two separate spectrum bands (licensed and unlicensed). In the lab, the pair has proven that they can do so without causing any interference.

LTE-U could potentially “take over” the band it operates in, which would, in turn, cause devices that use Wi-Fi to experience “degraded” service, service interruptions, and/or complete loss of their connections. However, Ericsson and Qualcomm claim that they have implemented LTE-U in a way that lets LAA and Wi-Fi users both have an equal amount of spectrum access.

According to Ericsson, LTE-U is idyllic for indoor usage of smartphone applications. In a release, the company expressed that “licensed band provides an anchor to ensure a seamless user experience with full mobility while the unlicensed band provides incremental capacity and enables faster data speeds.”

Ericsson and Qualcomm have plans to demonstrate the technology at the Mobile World Congress next month.

Singtel Sony and Warner Bros team up in HOOQ – Beat Netflix to Asia

Netflix has been beaten to the punch in the Asian market when Singtel announced that it has partnered with Sony Pictures and Warner Brothers to bring video streaming services to the region.

HOOQ video streaming serviceDescribed as a “joint venture startup”, HOOQ, will initially offer 10,000 movies and TV shows comprising of Hollywood movies, U.S. TV serials and domestic content from India, China, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Korea and Japan.

The Telecom giant did not reveal a release date but said that it will go online in the first three months of 2015, serving first to consumers in Indonesia, Philippines, India and Thailand.

Singtel plans to do a “progressive rollout” to other countries where the company already has business. Singapore and Australia are also possible future markets.

Unlike with Netflix, customers won’t be limited to payment via credit-card as credit-card usage is low in the region. Singtel said it will use “billing capabilities” but no specific indication of the price was given.

Netflix has not yet ventured into the Asia Pacific and only late last year announced that it will launch this year in Australia and New Zealand. This means HOOQ will be the first such streaming service to cater to Asia giving it a first mover advantage.

“We are starting this venture to change the way people across Asia view entertainment. Today, across developing markets, there is limited access to quality entertainment, streamed directly to the screen of one’s choice. It’s either illegal, high cost or difficult to get. We aim to fix that,” said Peter Bithos, CEO of HOOQ, in a statement.

Samsung To Introduce New All-In-One Curved Screen PC – Ativ One 7 Curved

Samsung Group seems to have all sorts of new and innovative electronic devices planned for launch in this upcoming year. One of the tech industry conglomerate’s newest products that it plans to reveal at the CES 2015 is its new all-in-one curved screen pc.

Samung Ativ One 7 CurvedThis latest Samsung PC invention is being called the Ativ One 7 Curved. This ground-breaking new desktop PC features a curved display monitor, and Samsung claims that this Ativ One 7 is the very first all-in-one PC to have the famed curved display.

It seems pretty apparent that Samsung has all but dominated the usage of the famous curved screen feature. Throughout the most recent couple of years, the company has added the feature to some of its recent smartphone designs and even a select few of its HDTVs. And then a few months ago, Samsung released a 27-inch curved monitor for desktop computers.

The new Ativ One 7 Curved includes that curved monitor and also has a whole PC built around it. It is a 27-inch monitor and has a 1080p HD resolution. The PC itself is running an Intel Core i5 processor, a TB hard disk drive, 8GB of RAM , and the operating system is Windows 8.1 64-bit version.

A few other added attributes include Dolby Sound Effects, a 1080p HD webcam, HDMI input/output, and APT-X lossless audio transmission technology which is a technology that enhances sound from its dual 10-watt speakers. Samsung smartphone users can use the Samsung company’s patented SideSync 3.0 software to make phone calls, and they can also receive and view their text messages on the computer’s curved screen.

The Ativ One 7’s curvy monitor design helps to lessen screen glare and is more immersive than a normal pc monitor. When the new Samsung curved PC is finally released onto the market, it will have a selling price of $1299.99. The company is planning the Ativ One 7 Curved’s initial launch in the first quarter of 2015.

All “My Channels” app users will be able to customize the broadcast they enjoy the most, be it set-top box channels or cable.

LG Smart TVPalm originally created the webOS mobile operating system to be used on its early smartphone models. HP purchased the company for nearly $1.2 billion and then closed it down the very next year.  Last year, LG brought the platform back to life in its smart TV line. LG calls this latest update “an innovative smart TV solution.”

The vice  president  of LG,  In-kyu Lee stated that  the new, smarter webOS 2.0  features will enable its users to experience an  easier,  simpler, more intuitive than ever before, next-generation smart TV platform. LG considers the new platform to be another example of the company’s “commitment to its leadership role in the next generation TV market.”

LG’s new webOS 2.0 smart TV platform will come equipped with a 2015 “New Magic Remote” for its new smart functions. The new remote will be normal remote-sized and will feature a numeric keypad for manually keying in channels.

The company’s new Quantom Dot as well as other LCD and OLED smart TV sets will be running the new platform.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Sales 40% Below Expected Numbers

Samsung Galaxy S5 is for sure one of the most advanced smartphones that the company has created, but the sales are less than Samsung expected, says The Wall Street Magazine.

Samsung Galaxy S5According to the magazine the first three months of after the release in April, Samsung sold 40% less devices than predicted.

Samsung sold 12 million Galaxy S5 smartphones, which is compared to 16 million Galaxy S4 sold in the first three months after the release.

The only positive thing for the company is that despite these figures, actual sales of S5 in the US fared better than S4 and it seems that the US is, however, Samsung’s biggest market. But, that is not the case in China, where Samsung sells half less smartphones unlike antecedent of S5 Galaxy.

However, you should take into account that Samsung has still not released any official numbers in terms of sales of the smartphone and the The Wall Street is placing this information according to its sources close to the company.

It should also be acknowledged that the company has faced several problems regarding the business of mobile phones, and one of the biggest problems was the increasing competition in the market, especially from China, so they have same serious plans for changing their strategy and focusing on developing those models that are most popular.

It seems that 2015 will be an interesting year with regards to Samsung and their mobile phones.
