For Whom the Bell Tolls: Is Cable TV Nearing Extinction Due to the Ever Expanding Market Reach of Streaming TV?

Last year in October, HBO made it clear that the company plans to enter the lucrative and ever expanding streaming TV market by rolling out its own standalone streaming service at some point in 2015. Quite predictably, the market was abuzz with all sorts of speculations within hours – with some even going to the extent that this could well be the end of cable television as we know it.

Internet TV streamingAdding more to these speculations, CBS announced only a day later that it too was preparing to join the bandwagon by launching a proprietary streaming service. Similar announcement came from Showtime, CBS’s flagship entertainment channel.

Netflix Hosts Internet TV Summit in Utah

On Thursday, December 11, 2014 Netflix held its very first “Internet TV Summit.” The affair was deemed a private one and had an array of entertainment industry bigwigs in attendance. The Summit was hosted at a posh and classy upscale resort located in Utah.

The CEO of NNetflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastingsetflix, Reed Hastings and the Netflix chief content officer, Ted Sarandos both hosted the legendary summit event. The Amangiri luxury resort, which is in the Southern Utah area, was the location where the Netflix-hosted Internet TV summit took place.

Some of major execs who attended the event include: the Chairman-CEO of Warner Brothers: Kevin Tsujihara, the president of Sony Pictures Television: Steve Mosko, the CEO of Discovery Communications: David Zaslav; the chairman of the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group: Jeff Shell; the CEO of DreamWorks Animation: Jeffrey Katzenberg, the chairman and co-founder of Imagine Entertainment: Brian Grazer, the CEO of Lionsgate Films: Jon Feltheimer, and vice chairman of Lionsgate Films: Michael Burns.

Invitations to the Netflix-hosted summit had been extended to both CBS and HBO but neither company was reported to have had execs in attendance.

A spokesperson for Netflix confirmed that the privately hosted event indeed took place, but declined to provide any of the major details, such as who all was in attendance or what the primary motivation for the event essentially was.

A company rep described the event as an informal “one-day discussion about the future of Internet TV, bringing together our friends from both the entertainment and technology industries.”

The affair was similar to other informal gatherings the e-commerce industry giant has held such as: Amazon Campfire and Google Zeitgeist. Both events had literally dozens of novelists in attendance.

CBS Announce End of The Mentalist

CBS’s popular crime drama series The Mentalist is soon to be coming to an end, according to the network, who have announced that the upcoming seventh season of the show will be its last after a run that began in 2008.

the_mentalist_cbsAnd in a more positive side to the idea of ‘ending sooner than expected’, CBS have also announced that the season, set to run for a total of 13 episodes (leaving the show on an end count of 151) will broadcast earlier than originally anticipated, with a premiere date of 30 November.

This will see the series, for around a month until it is pushed into a Wednesday night timeslot, filling a temporary programming gap on CBS for Sunday evenings, keeping the space warm for 5 weeks in preparation for a return of The Good Wife on 4 January.

In its Wednesday slot, The Mentalist will run the remaining 12 episodes through to a special double-length, 2-hour season and show finale on 18 February, bringing an end to the story of “Patrick Jane” (Simon Baker), a former psychic working as a consultant to the semi-fictitious California Bureau of Investigation, and later the FBI, using his skills of observation to try and break down criminals.

While producers had had hopes of taking the network elsewhere should CBS drop the format, the way they produce the final season of the show will go some way to determining how much they want the show to continue and how much other potential host networks should be interested, but if The Mentalist does end, will it do so on a high note ratings and quality-wise?

Bradley Cooper To Assist With CBS Limitless Adaptation

Any fans of the Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman-led movie Lucy this year may or may not be surprised to learn (depending on their length of memory or brain capacity being used) that there was a film made on similar ‘maximum brain capacity’ premises, once upon a time in 2011, starring that guy from The Hangover.

limitless_posterBradley Cooper featured alongside Robert De Niro in Limitless, which looked at the effects of experimental mind-enhancing drug ‘NZT’ on everyday writer “Eddie Morra” (Cooper), who quickly excelled in his career and beyond but struggled against the side effects of ‘the clear pills’ – including their previous owners.

For a while now, it has been known that a TV-based follow-up is planned to occur on CBS, with writing by Craig Sweeny (Elementary, Medium), and whilst Cooper will not come back to the lead role for the planned pilot episode, he has agreed to be an executive producer on the project, which is now looking a lot closer to realisation.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that he will join his production company partner Todd Phillips (The Hangover) in their first-ever TV project together, Sweeny, Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Roberto Orci and the film’s writer Leslie Dixon and co-producer Scott Kroopf.

An additional return from the movie will be director Neil Burger, who will take on the same role for the pilot episode, which will reportedly continue from the movie’s ending, following new character “Brian Sinclair”, as he becomes persuaded to use NZT’s mind-enhancing abilities for good.

Carrying on from a box office-leading film that made over $160 million worldwide, does Limitless as a TV series have more potential to thrive than the many other movie adaptations proposed? At the very least… the possibilities are plentiful…

Charlie Sheen Is ‘One Meeting Away’ From Two and a Half Men Comeback

With the end finally in sight for veteran CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men, the figure involved in the show’s most controversial moment(s) (that did not even happen on-screen) has again reiterated his desire to forget what happened and make one last appearance before the final season is over.

charlie_sheen_cigar_cowboyCharlie Sheen, now leading FX sitcom Anger Management, announced in an interview his belief that he is close to making a return on Two and a Half Men as former lead character “Charlie Harper”.

Speaking to Extra in an interview, he recently stated: “They know that I want to do it, and I know that they’re open to it, so I guess we’re just a meeting away from making it happen. I just think I owe it some measure of closure. I owe it to the fans, I owe it to myself, I owe it to Chuck [Lorre, series creator], Jon [Cryer, co-star]. Yeah, I just think it makes sense.”

Lorre’s position on the matter is not as definitive, with most of his comments on the 12th and final season of the show being on how it will focus on the characters of Ashton Kutcher (Sheen’s replacement) and Jon Cryer (the only one of the Two and a Half Men in the title to last the distance). He stated of the planned closure for them: “Outside characters will come in as they do, but that’s not the focus.”

Whether Charlie Sheen will be in any part of that focus remains to be seen, as is the further challenge of writing a deceased character back into the show, should the producers decide to remember the good times of Charlie Harper:

CBS All Access Offers Live & Catch-Up Streaming TV Service

CBS have become the first US TV network to launch a dedicated streaming TV service that will let viewers watch live TV content, as well as catch-Up and full seasons of hit shows on-demand.

CBS-All-AccessBut there is a cost involved with the service, which is called CBS All Access and will set back users $5.99 monthly. On offer will be live streaming of local CBS TV stations in 14 areas that include New York, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver, Sacramento, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore.

Also available is on-demand streaming of 15 hit shows such as NCIS, CSI, and The Good Wife, along with thousands of episodes of classic TV shows such as Star Trek and Twin Peaks.

Although some CBS content is available for streaming elsewhere such as Hulu and Netflix, CBS All Access will be the first time that a bigger catalog of CBS shows can be accessed.

The service will be welcome to cord cutters along with those that are looking to dump expensive cable and satellite for a more ‘a la carte’ service, and makes for a good week after cable giant HBO also just revealed plans to offer a streaming service in 2015.

The big news about this service is the offer of streaming live TV. Previously those wishing to dump cable have had to endure waiting a day (or even several), before seeing TV shows. The other big news (and also bad news) is that live sports streaming of major events including NFL will not be available at this time.

Speaking about the new service in a statement, president of CBS Television Stations, Peter Dunn said, “With video consumption habits changing all the time, it is very important that we continue to provide the best local news, entertainment and sports via a service like CBS All Access. Television stations have been the fabric of local broadcasting for 75 years, and today’s announcement is part of paving the way for the next 75.”

The service can be accessed through the CBS All Access website as well via the iOS and Android apps.
