Netflix To Renew Doctor Who Series? – in Talks with BBC

Are you amongst the fans of the popular Doctor Who series using Netflix and are dreading February 1st?
The day when Doctor Who is planned to be removed from Netflix.

Doctor Who soon removed from NetflixThough the past few days there have been a big uproar from fans on the internet: petitions have been signed, requests made to Netflix to reconsider and countless angry comments on blogs and sites all over the web.

But you may remain calm, at least according to a Netflix source close to”The Best of Netflix” blog, whom told that the streaming service is in talks with BBC to keep the show going. And a deal may be reached before the February deadline. The source said that there is potential that the deal could cancel the removal entirely.

The contract negotiation may most likely be a “BBC package renewal”. This means that less popular BBC shows may also return alongside Doctor Who.

This type of “cliffhanger removal” is quite common. But it does not always cause an uproar like in the case of Doctor Who. The BBC series has a very loyal and wide fan base so it should come as no surprise.

Before removal, Netflix takes into consideration the show’s popularity and customer service “votes”. The latter is a statistic based on how many people have called in to complain about the series being removed or request for an unavailable title.

Dr. Who’s original and new series’ have been a massive hit on Netflix making it one of the most streamed television shows. The streaming company has probably brought countless of new fans to the series through their content.

Idris Alba On Board Producer & Neil Cross Writing For “Luther” US Remade

A TV show that is amongst the most acclaimed British series of the recent decade, BBC criminal drama show “Luther” is getting a remake, intended to be shown in America.

TV show Luther posterAfter holding the British audience captive with three seasons, “Luther” is situated to be placed over the big pond, with Fox adjusting the show for an American viewers. However the star of the show Idris Elba, who played the main criminologist John Luther, is ready to take the producers place, but the 42-year-old star is not anticipated to star an acting role.

The three aired seasons, created by Neil Cross, has been officially broadcasted on BBC America, but yet Fox are convinced to the point that the remake will be a hit and they’ve given a commitment with a hefty seven-figure fine if they do not air the first episode.

“Luther” focused on John Luther (Elba), a great virtuoso homicide detective and analyst, whose great personality and mind can’t generally spare him from the hazardous situations that follow him during the show. After the end the last season with a total of 14 episodes shown over the seasons, Cross has left some open space for “Luther” to came back as a movie featuring Elba.

The BBC show still has a solid following in the UK and Idris has in an previous interview made the fans pleased when he told the Radio Times, that he’s been crusading to make one last TV incarnation of “Luther”.
“I am desperately trying to make that happen,” he said. “I think we’re gonna probably do one more incarnation on TV. But not a season – a one-off. There’s a story idea but no script yet. But we’re gunning to do it at the end of this year. There’s a lot of pressure from everyone to make it, so we’re gonna do it.”

Also in January the star indicated that there is a strong possibility of screening “Luther” to a movie adaptation. Alba explained that “A movie is is definitely on the cards, we’ve been really lucky that Luther is so popular… it’s a small show, we did four episodes and we got such a massive following worldwide, so Neil Cross and I are aiming to do the film.”.

It is worth mentioning that “Luther” earned eight Emmy awards for best miniseries, best performing artist (Elba), and best writing/directing.
The TV show also got some Golden Globe nominations last year.

Doctor Who Showrunner Claims Ratings Not In Decline

Producers of a TV programme will naturally have an attachment to something they have helped make and as such will defend its quality and creative vision until the cows come home, but one thing that cannot be argued with (for better or worse) is ratings, especially those in consistent timeslots, unless your name is Steven Moffat, of Doctor Who.

doctor_who_visionThe showrunner of the long-running BBC1 sci-fi series has defended an apparent decline in ratings in recent times, and while that sort of argument usually starts and ends with cold hard statistics, Moffat claims other factors are responsible, with suggestions that audience numbers overall have ‘barely changed’ since the show’s revival in 2005.

Speaking on the panel of Doctor Who: Anatomy of a Hit at the Royal Television Society earlier this week, Moffat said of the show and its performance: “The figures are the same – they’re just the same. If by ‘ratings’, you mean the number of people who watch the show… they are the same. The headline – boring though it is – is that they’ve barely changed since Doctor Who came back.”

He then brought in the argument of how catch-up TV is affecting scripted series’ first broadcast performances due to being able to catch-up to episodes in their own time rather than on a more traditional linear schedule, adding: “Since Matt Smith took over Doctor Who – the time I’ve been doing it – the number of people that watch the show on iPlayer has trebled. The way people watch it has changed. People watch it on catch-up to a much greater degree, but there is no drop-off in the ratings. For the record, if our overnights were our final rating, that would still count as a hit. I would be working hard, even as a Scot, to be disappointed!”

Ending on 5.4m with their most recent season finale last weekend (8 November), the show will move into its Christmas special with high hopes of getting more viewers on a one-off basis, but more permanently is Moffat right in believing that the end figure for high-profile TV isn’t all that important considering the streaming options now on offer?

One surefire way to improve the ratings on all formats, though, is to invoke in the current ‘Doctor’ character even more of an edge from the actor’s previous roles. Moral guardians aside, who wouldn’t want to watch Doctor Tucker in a battle of wits against the villains of space and time:

BBC iPlayer Add Radio Visual Content

For those that are of the belief that radio is dead… they are incredibly wrong if the BBC‘s faith in the format is anything to go by… you just have to add a little video to it, that’s all.

radio_1_logoThe British public broadcaster have made a new change to their well-known BBC iPlayer catch-up service, in making the BBC Radio 1 station the first and currently only radio station to be featured amongst their catch-up TV content on the channel list.

While the content will naturally not be as well-produced as their TV counterparts, the audio should at least be top-notch, with viewers able to tap into live and on-demand webcam-based and original special event content made by the radio station, as of yesterday (10 November), and considering that most radio coverage on British-wide stations is already streamed with such a video option, the broadcasters have not considered it too big a stretch to incorporate their biggest station into their on-demand TV platform.

BBC controller Ben Cooper said of the changes made: “What you’ll find on iPlayer will focus on Radio 1 live events, our family of brilliant presenters, and, of course, the lives of our young audience. Underpinning much of this is our dedication to discovering and curating the best new music. Our challenge is to continue to develop a proposition that both brings new young audiences to BBC iPlayer and also acts as another access point for audiences to discover the breadth of incredible content that Radio 1 delivers.”

Content available on launch includes coverage of the Teen Awards, a ‘brand new music chart show’, and recent ‘Live Lounge’ interview and music sessions with celebrities including Adele and modern method-lover Taylor Swift.

Following on from an existing official YouTube channel for BBC Radio 1 listeners to watch and of course the existing on-demand radio platform provided by the BBC, will turning radio into TV online be an unusual breakthrough in the on-demand industry?

Atlantis Season 2 Due To Rise Quickly In USA

In what can only really be seen as a continuing effort to wean people off of Merlin considering its direct replacement status, the BBC have announced further plans for the second season of their fantasy/mythology drama Atlantis, with the announcement of how the upcoming next run of the show will be aired in the USA.

atlantis_fire_and_swordWhilst it is usually the place of British networks such as Sky to promote a major event in an American TV show by either simulcasting or short-delaying the content for minimum waiting time, the roles are occasionally reversed when the BBC are involved with one of their biggest shows, which they must consider Atlantis to be, given that it has been scheduled to air in the USA on the BBC America channel just a few hours after it has broadcast in the UK.

It has been confirmed that shortly after airing on BBC One in the UK, the second season premiere of Atlantis will be viewable on BBC America on Saturday 15 November at 9pm ET, forming a part of the network’s ‘Supernatural Saturday’ programming block.

Taking place in-show one year after the previous season finished in Ancient Greece, will Atlantis be able to continue to grow off-screen as well as it seeks to fill some very large shoes? A preview of what they will put up soon in this battle for affection can be seen below:

Tom & Jerry Join UK Series Strictly Come Dancing For Charity Special

Dancing, especially the ballroom variety, would not be anywhere near the top of a list of activities most associated with violence, but it could soon get that way for the BBC‘s Children in Need charity special, after they revealed a promotional image for one of the most unusual of TV cross-overs.

tom_&_jerry_strictly_come_dancingIn this instance, the broadcaster’s popular celebrity dancing contest Strictly Come Dancing will turn into cartoon form for a few minutes as the judges watch a performance from arguably the most famous cartoon animals on the planet.

Set to be seen in the lengthy annual fundraising spectacular on Friday 14 November, the cat & mouse duo of Tom & Jerry will hope to put old racism implications and their own violent behaviors behind them for a dance together, though being who they are it would be disappointing if slapstick did not eventually break out.

Also appearing in Strictly Come Dancing‘s efforts towards Children in Need this year is former veteran presenter Sir Bruce Forsyth, who will introduce a special one-off competition in which four ‘young ballroom champions’ will dance alongside Strictly Come Dancing‘s celebrity-partnering professional dancers.

Starting at 7:30pm with plans to include a number of celebrity and special musical performances along with comedy sketches of popular shows, will Children in Need‘s surprise new guests help significantly in adding to the £740m raised by the charity on TV since launch in 1980?

Former Eurovision Song Contest commentator and Children in Need‘s ‘life president’ Sir Terry Wogan said of the upcoming 2014 edition of the show: “It was my privilege to present the very first Children in Need in 1980 and over the years it has truly become the British Public’s charity. Their extraordinary generosity has meant that their donations of over £740 million have made a real difference to the lives of this country’s disadvantaged children and young people. It’s an honour and pleasure to be part of a great charity and I am looking forward to presenting an evening full of entertainment with the usual suspects, Tess, Fearne, Nick and our new host Rochelle.”

And for this year’s edition, producers can be rest assured that despite spending much of their time with things like this…

…the new dancers have been practicing for their bit for a very long time:
