The future of Tablet Computers in Enterprises

There are too many different types of tablet computers across a variety of platforms floating out there in the market today – but the million dollar question here is, which of these devices really hold the potential to evolve as the workspace favorite in the long run?

Tablets in the business worldMany observers tend to be inclined towards the belief that tablets are the future and quite understandably, it’s that kind of a prediction that PC makers do not take too kindly to.

While, many of us don’t really believe that tablets can pose serious existential threat to laptops (and PCs) in workspace, it’s an undeniable fact that enterprise IT has come a long way in the past few years. As a part of this change, tablets are playing an increasingly more dominant role at work – either through bring-your-own-device (BYOD) program for the staff or through direct purchases by the organization itself.

In a bid to stand out in the cut throat competitive market, tablet suppliers usually offer an array of products varying by operating system, screen size, connectivity options as well as other accessories and features. The size of the device plays a particularly important role when it comes to attracting buyers. For example, surveys conducted on online shopping trends in the U.S. have highlighted that most buyers usually tend to opt for traditional tablet sizes.

According to one study, 61 per cent of the consumers who either own or plan to own a tablet prefer slates sizing in the range of 8.9” and 10.1”. Notably, this range includes products such as the Amazon Kindle HD (8.9”), Apple’s iPad (9.7”) and Samsung’s Galaxy (10.1”). However, the fact that 39 per cent consumers do not prefer tablets belonging to this category leaves ample space for devices with other form factors to bloom.

The same study found that approximately 16 per cent consumers prefer slates between 7” and 7.9”. At 7”, Amazon’s original Kindle Fire HD is a good option for those preferring products of that size, and so is the iPad Mini that has been playing an increasingly more important role in Apple’s tablet portfolio. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also committed towards controlling a big chunk of the smaller tablet market with its Windows 8.1 and Windows RT OS powered devices.Ipad Mini 3

Larger tablets have their own fan-base too. The study concluded that 11 per cent consumers preferred tablets larger than 10.1”. However, 12 per cent consumers do not know what kind of tablet they actually want. For them, it is extremely important to try out a device firsthand before purchasing it. This, no doubt, highlights the importance of offering a superior retail experience to consumers – something Apple seems to have mastered quite well over the years.ga

Apart from the size, another crucial factor that adds to the success or failure of a device is the Operating System. Traditionally, Apple has been the dominant force in this category with its iOS platform surpassing the competitors by huge margins. However, with the popularity of Android powered slates soaring high and the emergence of many new and promising Windows tablets in the recent past has made sure that Apple’s firm grip over the worldwide tablet market comes under severe pressure.

Tablets are slowly but steadily making their way into the modern workspace, and the fact that there will be around 738 million sold devices by 2017 further boosts the prospects of a more widespread BYOD behavior.

Tablets enable the cloudIn those offices where BYOD can’t be an option on legal ground or for some other reason, a co-opt policy could be the answer. This is when companies could exercise the option of purchasing slates at par with the best consumer devices available in the market. Microsoft sees a much more lucrative future here for the company’s tablet portfolio that come blessed with the power of popular Windows applications such as Office.

Tablet suppliers will also have to take into account the fact that most companies prefer to build their unique systems for employees. The ability to build proprietary apps for intra-office usage at a much lower cost is another important factor that gives tablet computers an edge in the modern workspace. Many companies these days are using software development kits to roll out programs designed to solve the issues their employees face during day-to-day operations. Therefore, making their platforms easier and more accessible for app development could give tablet suppliers a key edge over their competitors.

Its that time of the year again, for one of the biggest film festivals in the entertainment calendar, the Cannes Film Festival, or the full original title, Le Festival International du Film de Cannes. The annual festival, now in its 68th year, takes place in the now iconic Cannes, France, where it will run from 13th – 24th May. Founded in 1946 by Jean Zay who at the time as French Minister of National Education, wanted to celebrate world cinema. Originally the festival was open to entries from only 16 countries, with one representative from each country to ensure equality. Before the Palme d’Or award was introduced in 1955 as the main prize, it was called the Grand Prix du Festival, awarded to the best film of the competition.

Festival de Cannes logo Since its inception, the festival’s rise to prominence has led to it now being one of the most important festivals of the year. Due to its non-public, invite-only exclusive nature only lends to the heavily media focussed event, as it attracts many film stars and directors as a means to further promote their films. Cannes has become instrumental in showcasing the best European films, and since 1959 when the Marché du Film was introduced, it has become the busiest film market in the world. Cannes allows a platform for buyers and sellers to exchange film and distribution rights, which many consider to be the first major event on the calendar for the buying and selling of international film rights, as it attracts distributors from all over the world.

The Palme d’Or, the ‘Golden Palm’ in English, is the highest prize awarded at Cannes. After taking over from the Grand Prix du Festival in 1955, the award is given to the best film of the festival. Past winners have included The Conversation by Francis Ford Coppola, Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese), Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola), Barton Fink (The Coen Brothers) and Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino).

Aside from the Palme d’Or, the most prestigious prize, there are many categories celebrating the different aspects of film. The Prix du Jury is awarded to the best film as chosen by the jury, which is comprised of international artists chosen prior to the festival by the board of directors. Awarding acting performances are the two accolades Prix d’interprétation féminine and Prix d’interprétation masculine, along with Prix de la mise en scéne for Best Director. Prix du scénario is awarded for the best screenplay at the festival.

Samsung Recorded Bend Test to Prove Strength of its Galaxy S6 Edge

Samsung apparently chose NOT to ignore the SquareTrade deforming, bending and then ultimately destroying the tech industry giant’s latest and greatest Galaxy “S” series smartphone model. In its own official response to the bend test that had been recently published, Samsung posted a blog post reply that slammed SquareTrade for placing the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge smartphone model under a massive amount of weight which the Samsung company claims rarely ever occurs in normal circumstances. The company also says that its internal figures have discovered that the force that’s typically generated whenever an individual presses on their back pocket is around 66lbf.

Samsung Bending it like BeckhamSamsung says in its own blog post that its internal test results indicated that both new Samsung Galaxy “S” series phones: the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge are not bendable smartphone devices—even under 79lbf, the equivalence of applying pressure to snap a group of 5 pencils all at one time. The pencils that are broken in half appear in the Samsung company’s own video of its bend test. Samsung also noted in a clip of its video bend test that it’s not an easy task to break 4 pencils all at one time, and breaking 5 pencils is an even more difficult task.  The Samsung company subjected the Galaxy S6 to the specified force, but never went far enough to actually bend nor destroy its smartphone device, permanently.

Samsung is not happy about SquareTrade only having tested the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge with its screen facing upwards. The Samsung company had written that some smartphone devices have different durability in the front and the back sides, respectively. SquareTrade only tested the phone’s front side and this could mislead some consumers about the durability of certain smartphone devices. Therefore, in addition to posting a company bend test and a rebuttal, Samsung formally requested SquareTrade to run the test again, but this time to use both sides of the smartphone, and publicize the results.
