Currys and PC World have revealed that they are teaming up to launch a new online pay-per-view movie streaming service in the UK, supplying a range of films under a transaction-based format, starting on Thursday on 1 March.
The video on-demand service, named ‘KnowHow Movies‘ will not have a subscription option, instead providing the means to view, buy (£12.99 per ‘new’ title, and a minimum of £5.99 per purchase from the ‘back catalog’) or rent (£3.99, £2.99) movies, as well as and TV shows (downloads starting from £1.99), working from a number of platforms including smart TV’s, tablet computers, smartphones, and laptops, with the added ability for users to bookmark their viewing between devices for a more seamless experience.
KnowHow currently has agreed carriage deals with old and future releases from Warner Bros., Disney, and Momentum Pictures, With plans to add more studios and distributors ‘immediately’, as well as sourcing other platform hosts other than their start-up arrangements with PC’s and Macs for desktop users.
It will not be the first time that electronics retailers Currys and PC World have teamed up (considering that they are both owned by Dixons Retail, and in some cases even share physical store space), but it will be a landmark attempt for the pair any kind of entertainment service, usually just sticking to the devices that the media can be viewed on, but hope there will be potential to sell movie streaming to their collective customer base of 19m people to take on rivals such as LoveFilm, Netflix, and retailer HMV. As part of the move to integrate the different elements of their business, they are pledging that each new ‘connected device’ brought from either one of the stores will include KnowHow Movies already installed, with demonstrations by their sales staff.
Niall O’Keeffe, who has been appointed as ‘development director’ of the project, stated: “With KnowHow Movies we are offering customers the most flexible service available – they will only pay for what they watch, will have access to all the latest releases instantly, and can buy and view films and TV shows on a wide range of their connected devices. As a high street retailer we are also in the unique position of being able to help customers who are less confident with tech by showing them how to install and use the service. TVs and the home entertainment sector is a cornerstone of our business, and it’s hugely exciting to be taking this next step and offering our customers great content to be enjoyed on their connected devices.”
Currys and PC World will no doubt begin their new month with optimism over branching out to a new service, but will physical and digital sales make an effective combination?
