Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck

This April marks the 21st anniversary of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s untimely death back in 1994. Cobain: Montage of Heck is the first authorised documentary of the lead singer and guitarist to be made. Approached by Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, documentary filmmaker Brett Morgen was given unrestricted access to the archives of Kurt’s life, including video tapes, audio recordings and other personal material that has never been seen before.

Kurt Cobain at MTV unpluggedHaving seen Morgen’s previous documentary on film producer Robert Evans, The Kid Stays in the Picture, Courtney Love approached Morgen and said she enjoyed his use of archive footage on the documentary and asked if he wanted to produce a documentary on Cobain. Allowing Morgen complete creative control, Courtney Love handed over countless hours of video footage, 200 hours of audio recordings and over 4000 pages from diaries. Even upon completion, after viewing the finished documentary, both Courtney and Frances (Kurt and Courtney’s daughter) didn’t even request a single edit. Courtney Love even went on to claim the documentary was “the closest I’ve got to Kurt in 20 years.”

Brett Morgen’s has a varied and celebrated list of documentaries to his name, including Say it Loud: A Celebration of Black Music in America, a couple of sports documentaries including an episode of the highly acclaimed ESPN documentary series 30 for 30. The stand out film that caught the attention of Kurt Cobain’s wife, Courtney, was The Kid Stays in the Picture. Released in 2002, it documents the Paramount producer Robert Evans, the first actor to run a movie studio, who ran Paramount from 1966-1974 and oversaw such classics as The Godfather, Rosemary’s Baby and Chinatown.

The name Montage of Heck comes from a 36 minute mixtape found by Morgen of Cobain, a collection of songs ranging from Butthole Surfers, early Nirvana recordings to Simon and Garfunkel. Director Brett Morgen describes the tape as a “journey through Kurt’s mind”, exploring sides to the Nirvana frontman many had not seen before. The film also contains an unreleased 12 minute acoustic from Cobain, which is also to be released on the accompanying soundtrack, which has not got a release date yet.

There have been many documentaries about the untimely death of Kurt Cobain at just the age of 27, but none were given the rights to Nirvana’s music until now. It was Courtney Love’s unwavering support and trust in Brett Morgen’s vision that has lead to a documentary which did not even require a different cut or any changes from the filmmaker as it received the full stamp of approval from everyone close to Kurt. When a documentary is given creative freedom without outside interference, the filmmakers are able to tell the story that they truly believe in, without running the risk of being watered down.

Cobain: Montage of Heck premiered at the Sundance film festival back in January to critical acclaim from across the board and subsequently received glowing reviews from NME. April 7th has been the release date for the companion book, which includes unseen pictures and rare photographs from the Kurt Cobain archives. The film is set for a theatrical release on April 10th, with the HBO television airing in May.

Spin Around Video – YouTube Probable to Support 360-degree Videos Making the Most of Your VR Goggles

Reportedly, YouTube is in the works to roll out support for 360-degree video soon. The Google’s Cardboard VR solution, which turns Android smartphones into DIY virtual reality goggles, may have a hand in it.

DIY VR GogglesThere are lots of cameras available in the market which can record 360-degree videos today, so there is probably a demand from eager video makers to start experimenting.

There will be endless possibilities in the virtual reality market when YouTube, the biggest Internet TV platform on the Web, starts supporting 360-degree video. It could change the way we look at highlight reels from sporting events, as well as extreme sports, adding an extra edge for spectators.

A YouTube spokesperson spoke to Gizmodo providing a vague statement on the reports that the service is simply “working to support 360-degree videos in the coming weeks.” Further information beyond this statement is unknown, but still has everybody excited by possibilities.

People could soon have access to truckload of new 360-degree videos, made by professionals or the average Joe. There is already a lot of excitement over the possibility of a full-featured film viewed in VR.

Samsung is already paving the way for providing 360-degree videos on its own Milk VR service for Gear VR, announced on Monday.

Once an official announcement from YouTube is out, it could get many scrambling to create new content.

YouTube Now Features GIF Creation

GIF’s are now coming to YouTube. The feature is going to be first tested on PBS Idea Channel’s YouTube page.
To make a GIF the process is rather simple: by clicking on the share button, one can find an option to make a six-second GIF from the video.

Youtube feature - Create GIFsThe interface to make a GIF is quite straightforward and easy to use. It features an expanded video reel and controls for trimming. Users can trim up to six seconds of video and have options to add text at the bottom and top of the frame.

The animated GIF is hosted on YouTube’s servers and can be shared as a standalone link or embedded on a webpage.

Thus far, the option to make a GIF has not appeared elsewhere on YouTube but users can expect the feature to appear on other channels.

It will be interesting to see whether this feature is in the hands of the video uploader or whether it will be automatic. YouTube has so far not commented on any such plans.

In a “YouTube Creator Preview” video posted in late November, software engineer Michael Chang spoke out the experimental GIF feature.

A sign-up form is available for those who wish to join the GIF Beta program. Limitations on joining have not been provided by the company.

Black Mirror Now Streaming On Netflix

Black Mirror, the highly popular British TV serial depicting the darker side of life and technology, is now streaming on Netflix.

Black Mirror TV ShowThe miniseries created by Charlie Brooker, is described as a darker postmodern version of The Twilight Zone. Black Mirror currently has two seasons consisting of six hour-long episodes. A third season is in the works, as well as, a Hollywood movie adaption.

Each episode takes place in the near future and the stories in every episode stand alone from the others.

Brooker takes an element of the current technological world, and transforms it on to whole other level which may seem crazy yet is totally plausible.

“If technology is a drug–and it does feel like a drug–then what, precisely, are the side-effects? This area–between delight and discomfort–is where Black Mirror, my new drama series, is set. The “Black Mirror” of the title is the one you’ll find on every wall, on every desk, in the palm of every hand: the cold, shiny screen of a TV, a monitor, a smartphone,” says Brooker in the Guardian.

Earlier this year, rights to make a film version of the highly rated episode, “The Entire History of You”, was bought by Robert Downey Jr.

A Christmas special starring Jon Hamm and Oona Chaplin will be the next episode to air on December 25.

YouTube Change Their Counter As “Gangnam Style” Views Becomes Uncountable

The most-viewed video on YouTube, Psy’s “Gangnam Style”, has reached new heights. The number of views have surpassed the current view-counting limit set by YouTube, forcing the online video streaming website to upgrade their technology.

Psy in his Gangnam costumeThe amount of views reached by the video first posted in July 2012 has gone beyond what YouTube staff could have ever thought possible.

As explained on their blog on Google+, “Gangnam Style” has forced a change in the technology of how views are counted, by crossing the 32-bit integer mark.

“We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met Psy,” a spokesperson for YouTube explains. “‘Gangnam Style’ has been viewed so many times we have to upgrade! Hover over the counter in Psy’s video to see a little math magic and stay tuned for bigger and bigger numbers on YouTube.”

Psy cites the success of his video to be accidental when speaking to students at Harvard University in May 2013.”‘Gangnam Style’ was not normal,” he said. “‘Gangnam’ was not standard – that was an accident and accidents don’t happen often.”

Psy also admitted that he does not epect to ever match the level of success reached by “Gangnam Style” again.

Regarding his horse-riding dance in the music video, Psy told students at the world-famous Oxford Union that he stayed up for 30 nights to find that dance.

The Force Awakens in New Star Wars Trailer

Even with the release date still over a year away, the teaser trailer for Episode VII – The Force Awakens hit the internet and has made many an adult feel like a child again. JJ Abrams picked up the reigns from George Lucas, a move that shocked many. But as JJ Abrams is a huge fan himself, the series should be in good hands. Having already taken on Star Trek to good results, the creator of Lost now has an even bigger challenge in continuing the Star Wars saga.

Star wars the force awakensBeing only a teaser trailer, it doesn’t give much away, and the plot of the film still remains a mystery. But JJ Abrams has always been good at leaking just enough information to bring the hype up and rarely fails. All that is known is the film is set 30 years after the events of Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983) and includes a reunion from the old cast. It has been confirmed that Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford will all return, albeit minor roles, as Leia, Luke and Han once again.

But as for the lead roles, its still uncertain who will be playing who. The actors and actresses that have been announced include Gwendoline Christie who plays Brienne in Game of Thrones, Oscar Isaac (Drive) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave). The villain of the film has been announced as Adam Driver (Inside Llewyn Davis), and could possibly be the hooded sith character seen in the trailer. John Boyega (Attack the Block) is rumoured to be a lead role, but who he plays is a mystery. The trailer reveals him in stormtrooper armour without a helmet, whether he is one or merely disguised as one, is anyone’s guess.

The Force Awakens has been written by both JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan and is loosely based on an original outline by George Lucas before he abandoned it. Michael Arndt was originally signed on to pen the film, but due to creative differences he left the project and Kasdan was bought onboard. Lawrence is well known after his work on the original trilogy, having wrote the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Until more details are revealed, and of course the full trailer, fans can only wait in anticipation. Every fan hopes that JJ Abrams can do the series justice and in part, make up for the prequel trilogy’s disappointments.

Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens is set for release in December 2015.
