Wearables - the future or doom? It’s been awhile since wearable technology first came into existence – mostly in the form of experimental, prototype devices that companies used to test the waters before spending big bucks on these next-generation devices. However, it is the much hyped venture by tech heavyweights like Apple (Apple iWatch) and Google (Google Glass) that made everyone ask the million-dollar question: Are we heading towards an era when those fancy gadgets and devices often shown in Hollywood action and sci-fi flicks will finally become a reality?

WhatsApp Hits 700 Million Monthly Active Users – Also Rumoring Voice Service Support Already in February

Jan Koum, co-founder and chief executive of WhatsApp the massive messaging app, revealed earlier this week that WhatsApp now has more than 700 million monthly active users.
These users are sending over 30 Billion messages, about 40 messages per user, every day, which makes it one of the largest messaging services out there.

Whatsapp with 700 Million usersKroum released a statement on Facebook announcing the landmark: “I hope you all had a happy and peaceful holiday season. Today, we’re thrilled to share that WhatsApp has more than 700 million monthly active users. Additionally, every day our users now send over 30 billion messages. As humbled and excited as we are by these numbers and our continued growth, we’re even more excited to keep building a great product in 2015. Most of all, we’re grateful that so many of you are using WhatsApp to stay in touch with your friends and family, business colleagues and classmates. We promise to continue working hard to make WhatsApp even better.”

The mobile messaging app which was bought by Facebook last year, hit 600 million monthly active users in August 2014 and has increased by 16 percent since then. In April last year, the service had half a billion active users.

Last November, Facebook announced that it had reached the 500 million mark in active monthly users, following close behind WhatsApp. Users were forced to download Facebook’s messaging app in April, after the company announced that it would stop chat support in its native Facebook app.

On Tuesday, news sites buzzed with possibility of WhatsApp adding voice call support in 2015 through Skype. The feature was announced in February but never materialized in 2014.

WhatsApp was founded by Jan Koum and Brian Acton in 2009. They raised $58.3 million in funding before the service was acquired by Facebook in February 2014 for $19 billion in stock and cash.

Will we see one billion active users at the end of 2015?

Robots Are Learning How To Cook Food Through YouTube Videos

Researchers have developed robots in a way that can be taught to handle tools and learn cooking from none other than famed video website, YouTube.

Robotsapien - now cooking foodThe extraordinary method has been developed from the University of Maryland and NICTA, which is Australia’s Information and Communications Technology Research Centre of Excellence.

A paper was published by the research team and will be presented by them at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence’s 29th annual conference, within this month.

The kind of technology demonstrated by the robots is called deep learning which is the latest breakthrough in artificial intelligence.

Training systems are used in deep learning which are called artificial neural networks. They gather information in huge amounts from all kinds of sources, even pictures and sounds. Inferences are sent in response, after the information is received at the artificial neural networks.

A total of 88 YouTube videos of people cooking were collected by researchers as data. Commands were generated by researchers that resulted in the robots learning to cook.

“We believe this preliminary integrated system raises hope towards a fully intelligent robot for manipulation tasks that can automatically enrich its own knowledge resource by ‘watching’ recordings from the World Wide Web,” concluded the researchers in their paper.

The exciting development may be hallmark in the advancement in artificial intelligence, but it has left many apprehensive recalling disturbing memories of a potential future pictured in the “Terminator” movies.

World-renowned astrophysicist Stephan Hawking has warned of such threats. “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race,”said the astrophysicist.

CEO of Tesla Motors Elon Musk has said, “[I would] keep an eye on what’s going on with artificial intelligence … I think there’s potentially a dangerous outcome there.”

Google’s Driverless Cars To Hit The Roads Early Next Year

Google has unveiled the first working prototype of its innovative new driverless vehicle. The company said that the experimental car will be on the roads within the next year.

Google Driverless CarThe working prototype looks quite similar to the prototype revealed in May, this year. The earlier prototype however did not have working headlights and was not ready to hit the roads, but this one is.

During the holiday period, the driverless car will be driving on Google’s test track. By next year, it will be seen on the roads of North California, where Google headquarters are based. The car will be controlled through temporary manual controls, accessed by safety drivers if need be.

When the project was announced in May, Google said that the steering wheel and pedals will be removed eventually. The company aims to produce a car having two seats, seat-belts, luggage area and buttons to start and stop the car. A screen will also installed to display routes.

Google has been said to be working on both typical car parts and the technology to make the car drive by itself. Steering and breaking controls will be included, as well as, sensors to power the driverless technology. In the first working prototype, both these systems will come together.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in the UK has set trials to begin in January. Safety experts have issued warnings that the driverless cars are vulnerable to terrorists and hacker attacks which can create chaos and crashes on British roads.

Google published a statement this week on its new project: “The vehicle we unveiled in May was an early mockup—it didn’t even have real headlights! Since then, we’ve been working on different prototypes-of-prototypes, each designed to test different systems of a self-driving car—for example, the typical “car” parts like steering and braking, as well as the “self-driving” parts like the computer and sensors. We’ve now put all those systems together in this fully functional vehicle—our first complete prototype for fully autonomous driving.

We’re going to be spending the holidays zipping around our test track, and we hope to see you on the streets of Northern California in the new year. Our safety drivers will continue to oversee the vehicle for a while longer, using temporary manual controls as needed while we continue to test and learn. Happy holidays!”
