Apple Expands within Social Media – Launches Tumblr Blog for iTunes

Tumblr has a new member among its midst and its none other than Apple, the U.S-based consumer electronics company and manufacturer of the iPhone.

Apple uses Tumblr once moreApple’s expansion of social media has urged it to include Tumblr once again. The new iTunes Tumblr page is currently promoting the “best of 2014″ in music, movies, TV and books. Each category features “best of” videos and ideal reblogging elements like shareable GIF’s, photos, quotes and other content.

Unconfirmed rumours tell that Apple is also an advertiser on Tumblr, although its new blog wasn’t visible on Tumblr’s ad units, nor its trending and sponsored posts.

The intention behind the new iTunes Tumblr blog is to have it be further shared by users. The blog has Facebook and Twitter buttons to share content on other media and options to reblog or “favourite” within Tumblr.

Apple has mixed with Tumblr once before, when promoting the launch of iPhone 5c early this year. It was reported that Apple was also advertising on the social media site at the time. All content on that site now seems to be removed but is still live at isee5c.tumblr.com.

A few months after hiring Musa Tariq, previous social media head at Nike and Burberry, an Instagram account for iTunes was launched a few weeks ago.

Tumblr has been testing a new ad platform promoting mobile applications. It could help increase traffic to iTunes’ App Store by directing the user towards the App Store to download the app if they don’t already have it. Else, it allows users to open the app on their phones.

Apple ipad and iphoneApple claims that the upgrade can speed up processes on both devices, after previous users complains on weakly characteristics of execution performances.
This upgrade likewise incorporates various fixes, yet it has not given a rundown of particular bugs that iOS 8.1.1 corrects.

The upgrade can be found in two ways: downloaded over-the-air or through iTunes.

Frequency Search For Improvements In iOS Internet TV App Update

Internet TV app Frequency have revealed a new update to the iOS version of their platform, one they hope will provide greater optimization and newer features for their users to take advantage of.

frequency_logoThe free service has claimed to have met several of their users’ most-requested features, including search improvements and enhancements to navigation and user customization to add to current abilities such as AirPlay functionality and full-screen viewing.

The ‘universal app’ is one that brings videos from popular internet sources (such as dedicated video platforms (such as YouTube), social networks (including Facebook and Twitter), and news sources (including CNN and New York Times)) into a place where they can be browsed and viewed via one central hub. The iOS version, released as with other formats in early 2012, is the only edition to have received this latest update so far, with notes that it has been made to fit with the iOS 7 operating system and fixing bugs associated with it, particularly directed towards the iPad tablet computer.

Updates include being able to ‘search for videos and channels’ through the iOS tablet, as well as adding them to a ‘personal tuner’ in the form of customised channels, which in turn offer a user with daily updates regarding new content. Meanwhile, new navigational features allow fast transitions between ‘Guide’, ‘Search’, and ‘Watch’ modes, though one feature that may not seem as positive on paper is the removal of ‘portrait view’ mode, with the automatic screen-adjustment removed to allow a default landscape mode which Frequency believe is easier to work with and more compatible.

A summary of the free app reads: “Frequency is the best way to watch internet video from your favorite sources. This award-winning video app finds and organizes the newest videos from all your favorite publishers across the internet into streaming video channels – just for you.”

Apple Propose Siri Dock For Home Voice-Control

As the latest potential development in Apple’s plans to enter the home technology market (aside from their ongoing presence that started the company), a new recently-revealed patent from Apple also doubles as the next step for their voice interaction programme ‘Siri’, one which is more involved and directly focused on itself than any possible smart TV could be.

siri_dock_patentThe proposed Siri-centric product would be a ‘smart dock’, capable of ‘extending the range and capabilities’ of the Siri technology in a user’s home, on the idea of forming a central hub in which anyone can voice their commands to the service.

The American patent suggests a similarity to Google Glass’s “Ok, Glass” option, with the dock aiming to listen for user commands ‘at all times’, and in a rarity for an Apple product, would aim to be compatible with all makes and operating systems, provided they are an electronic device that can “…operate in a voice recognition mode.”

Listed as potential sources of voice control include ‘anything from laptops to car keys’, though the patented connected service as a whole, whilst published this week, was originally filed by Apple (under the current title of ‘Smart Dock for Activating a Voice Recognition Mode of a Portable Electronic Device’) in May 2012.

An extract from the patent reads: “…Such devices may include, for example, a laptop computer, a tablet device, a key fob, a car key, an access card, a multi-function device, a mobile phone, a portable gaming device, a portable multimedia player, a portable music player, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a household device, and/or any portable or non-portable electronic or electro-mechanical device and/or the like. For example, a portable electronic device can include an iPod, iPhone, iPad, MacBook, or iMac device available from Apple.”

Having debuted in 2011 on the iPhone 4S after 4 years of development, Apple’s Siri could arguably be considered one of their last major innovations up to now, but could it provide the key to their next one that will be much-needed in the current technology market?

Apple TV Update V6 Gets Released, Updated Then Re-Released

So Apple have managed to outdo themselves having 2 launches of the Apple TV software within a couple of days. The first version 6 was launched Friday but got taken down over the weekend due to stability issues.

apple_tv_boxBut now Apple have released a TV update that offers a number of features including free radio streaming using the  iTunes radio service, along with the ability to run media from the iCloud.

The V.6 update was taken down after users had library content disappear from their set-top boxes along with slow downloading. But the software was soon ready for a re-release.

The iTunes Radio service offers a free radio streaming service from the iCloud that offers more than 300 DJ-curated and genre focused stations similar to Spotify. The service will be available across all Apple’s portable devices, Mac, PC and Apple TV.

The other interesting feature is video playback from the iCloud. This feature will allow playback on the Apple TV from any iTunes purchase direct via streaming, without the file needing to be stored on any device.

The update comes days after Apple released the new iOS 7, and just before the expected  Apple TV hardware update due within the next month or so.

One Fifth Of Apple Customers Defect From Android

The development of the smartphone market is one which seems to be swinging towards the devices run by an Android operating system, while a new survey relating to it has investigated where the customers of such product have been before (if anywhere) with regards to other brands.

apple_samsung_cirp_smartphone_comparisionThe most notable of its figures found that Apple’s iOS system receives a greater proportion of its userbase from former Android smartphone users than any Android manufacturer in the opposite direction, with CNN reporting that the CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners) have recorded ‘20% of iPhone customers’ from the past previous year having bought their product in replacement for an Android device.

Android handsets, meanwhile, had a lot less cross-operating system transfers, with Samsung’s 7% of users being previous iPhone owners the leading level of changeover for any Android brand. It is important to note that the figures are only in proportion to the total number of new customers, though, and are not proof that the iPhone is selling more devices than their rivals, as with the figures that showed Samsung’s customers in the last year included 37% as ‘first-time smartphone buyers’, with Apple’s new userbase totalling 26% of their total.

In a further representation of the South Korean company’s variety in terms of sourcing customers, it was noted that they have gained more new business from ex-HTC, Motorola and Nokia users than Apple, who have beaten their rivals when it comes to drawing in users from BlackBerry.

An unusual additional statistic given by CIRP, meanwhile, was their ‘demographic data’, with their research suggesting that Apple users are on average ‘younger, better-educated and more disposable income’ than people who buy Samsung smartphone products. However, the same study indicates that ‘a significant majority’ (42%) of iPhone owners have upgraded their product from a previous-generation of iPhone, so the ‘disposable income’ part aside, make of those findings what you will…
