Review: Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks was and still is a cult series that has many fans worldwide. The series explores the contrast between the apparently normal lives of people and the dark secrets that lay underneath all the appearances. Despite being a huge success right from the start, the series is probably quite poorly understood as many are drawn to the twists and less by the deeper message. No doubt, Twin Peaks is a bizarre show with bizarre characters, stories and location, but one should watch it in a different key than that of a mere cop series.

David Lynch, the brain and the imagination behind Twin Peaks, directed several episodes and wrote most of them. He grew up in a time when the concept of America as a mass culture was increasingly forming. This American mass culture was increasingly superficial, and more and more Americans started to identify with it. Jazz, baseball, diners, and Superman the flawless hero are all elements of this superficial culture, and they were all elements of the TV series that Lynch grew up with. In those TV series depicting the quiet life of the suburbs, there was o crime, no insubordination, not even death, but more of a bland, lifeless atmosphere that somehow felt wrong.

Twin Peaks starts from the exact same premise: the quiet little town where everyone knows each other else, where life takes its course peacefully without significant conflicts. However, Twin Peaks then goes further than this image of a perfect suburb life. The people in this small town know each other and dont truly know each other. Everyone here has a secret agenda, or some things they want to keep secret. The community in Twin Peaks is far from idyllic. The queen of the prom is found dead following as it appears an orgy of sex and drugs. This is how we start to see the exact opposite of the ideal American suburb unfolding with each new Twin Peaks episode.

The series grows increasingly obscure. While the first season is full of humorous moments, interactions and ironies, the second season is much more obscure and difficult to follow.

Once you watch even one Twin Peaks episode you are sure to follow the entire series, and theres little chance you will ever get it out of your head. This is a brilliant David Lynch creation that never grows old.
