Review: The Middle
The series begins describing the location where the action takes place as the kind of suburb over which planes quickly pass en route to the major cities. It's 'the middle of nowhere'. The Middle reminds me a bit of My Name is Earl, because is somewhat the same genre.
The series presents a mother's point of view towards her life. Frankie is married to Mike and they have three children: Axel, who is a lazy guy and who walks naked around the house, Sue, who does not fit into any community although she desperately wants to, and Brick, a gifted child who reads all day but suffers from a nervous tic – he repeats certain words in a whisper. Frankie is a wife and a full time mother. However she is not a housewife, but a extremely active person who works every day to build a successful career in sales.
These five members of the family try to deal with the minimum income that they have and survive in a world where mediocrity is never enough. The series is about an ordinary family, experiencing real life problems. The endless, nightmarish and stupid questions like ‘If you were a color, what would you be?' are one of the motifs of the series.
The show presents typical American activities and the way that the Heck family, a somewhat predestined name, manages to handle things in any way possible, except the right way.
The Middle is a light comedy that shows money does not necessarily mean happiness. I recommend this show, especially if you enjoyed My Name is Earl.
