Review: The Americans
After the many unremarkable TV series in the police genre, or the silly comedies and the many thrillers that end in a 'no end' kind of style (such as Lost) it was about time a new TV series would approach a more serious topic in a fun, entertaining way. The Americans is definitely one of the shows that represent a breath of fresh air. The TV series deals with the spies active during the Cold War between the two superpowers, the USA and Russia.
The story unfolds from the perspective of two Russian agents operating on U.S. soil in the '80s. Keri Russell as Elizabeth Jennings and Matthew Rhys as Phillip Jennings pass as husband and wife with two children. Although the FBI is actively looking for spies throughout the story, they remain as unknowing as the couple's children, Paige and Henry, which were born Americans and think their family is a typical American one. The Russian spies manage to fulfill their assignments and escape FBI's monitoring every time.
So far the series shows no signs of embracing clichés or using 'cheap tricks' to keep the audience interested, yet it avoids confronting the two ideologies at war in detail. We can easily understand why this is so because the series is American and it wouldn’t look good to present the opponent's views in detail. Still, the series proves brave in its approach, and we can expect to see some interesting developments.
I hope the American public to like the story and watch the show even though we don't seem to have the classic story in which capitalism and the American people win. Unless that happens, The Americans will not air a second season. It would be a shame because it is a breath of fresh air when compare to the large mass of the series that return and reinterpret the same topics of American cinema.
If you want to see a good show in 2013, than the newly emerged The Americans is one of the best options right now. Start watching this series; you will be pleasantly surprised I am sure.
