Review: Star Trek
Star Trek is the creation of the great Gene Roddenberry, whose interest in science fiction dates back to the 40's of the last century. First Sci-Fi story produced by Gene was The Secret Weapon of 117, presented at the Chevron Theatre anthology show in 1956. By 1963, Roddenberry produced his first television series, The Lieutenant, under the aegis MGM.
In 1963, the people at MGM had reached the conclusion that realistic series are not that much in demand anymore, the more profitable being the action-adventure kind. Gene was already working on a Sci-Fi television series, named Star Trek, and he presented his ideas at the MGM, who seemed interested in his idea and promised that they will study it carefully. Once the filming of The Lieutenant reached the end, Roddenberry and sent his first ideas at MGM, but they were not at all enthusiastic and didn't agree to produce it.
Roddenberry then tried to sell his "train to the stars" to several production studios but without success. In 1964, however, the chance smiled and Desilu, a smaller company than MGM, but a confident one, gave Gene a contract for three years in April of the same year.
Once the production company was chosen, Gene needed furthermore a TV company to accept his show. It was not easy. The first choice was CBS, but they turned down. Finally, the manufacturer was able to make to deal with a rival company, NBC, which gave him the chance to write 3 different scripts of which one will be chosen as the pilot of the series.
One of scripts sent on 29 June 1964, was also one for "The Cage", which would become the pilot and of the series and the first transposition of the Star Trek universe on television. Roddenberry had to recruit a lot of people to help him put together a whole universe and a whole vision of the future of mankind. Among them were noted Harvey P. Lynn as a scientific advisor, Pato Guzman, assistant art director and production designer Matt Jefferies. The whole summer of 1964 lasted this creative brainstorming, the final script being sent to the NBC only in September, the TV Company giving the green light for the pilot.
Star Trek: The Original Series (originally called just Star Trek) is the first series in the Star Trek franchise, hence our interest in it. Even though today it is hard for any fan of the genre to watch the series without smiling, this show created the image of a future that gathered many fans over the decades, and it will surely win some more since it is the longest running series. Moreover, the characters and actors of this show will have one the of the most longevity, the original crew of the Starship Enterprise bringing fans in theaters for 3 decades since the first episode.
