Review: Downtown Abbey
The action in the series Downtown Abbey begins in 1912, the year Titanic sinks. It presents the lives of a British aristocratic family and also those of their servants. The Crawley family is composed of Lady Cora Crawley, Sir Robert Crawley and their daughters, Edith, Sybil and Mary. A very colorful, sophisticated, authoritative and entertaining presence is the girlís grandmother, mother of Sir Robert, Lady Violet Crawley, played by the fabulous Dame Maggie Smith.
When the heir of the family possessions dies in the wreck of the Titanic, the family has to find a husband for Mary, the eldest of the girls, in order for the assets to remain in the family. They find the perfect husband in the person of Matthew Crawley, a cousin of theirs, but whom Mary rejects. Matthew is a good guy, rejected at first but then desired. The relationship between Mary and Matthew has many twists: when on of them wants to be with the other, the other one doesn't want it, when they both want it, it's not possible for another reason or another.
In the background, but not less important, is presented the lives of the servants. There is an organization and hierarchy that only in English society can be found. Everyone knows what to do, but most of all, everyone knows what he or she mustnít. Butler Carson is the one that all the servants give account to. He decides who goes, who stays, who is sanctioned and who is paid. The romance stories are found not only upstairs in the rooms of the lords, but also down and they sometimes are more painful than those of their masters.
Downtown Abbey is a soap opera after all. If you like this kind of story, I gladly recommend you this TV series; it certainly has a certain charm to it.
