A cunning lawyer is suspected by his superiors that he might have lied regarding his educational 'background' and might not be suited to work in the courtroom. Therefore, he has to attend college courses where he finds himself surrounded by a diverse group of students and teachers. This is definitely a good set up for a comedy series.
The good news is that Community is a very funny show. The bad news is that time manages to stick its claws into its beautiful little face. Yes, Community is consistently amusing, but only for the first two seasons, the next ones are overshadowed by the first two.
Community knows what it is; it firmly establishes its identity from the very beginning, and claims to be nothing more than a show that makes you laugh. It's full of references to other movies and the 'pop culture' and it manages to convey different messages and even talk to the viewers as no other series does.
Each episode has its own soul, each being different enough so that you don't have any 'deja vu' feelings as the series progresses. The characters are ridiculous enough to make them cute, and their stories touch either your heart or your knowledge as a TV/movies fan. Too bad all this gradually loses relevance over time. The characters become just ordinary mouths with funny lines from time to time, without the personality they once had, taking the appearance of some trivial cartoon series. Also, the episodes become more and more interspersed with cinematic cliches that are so common and so despised; precisely the ones that the show used to mock in its first two seasons. Still, it is worth seeing, or at least tried. Is unique and a breath of fresh air.
Community manages to keep viewers entertained and is worth watching. However, after a few episodes the series looses some of its initial impact. Hopefully the producers will manage to bring the series back on track.
