Quick Verdict - WorldTVPC Rating: (4.0)
A good catch-Up TV website offering the standard 30 days of programming along with extra features for avid fans. Only real complaints are lack of older episodes because they take them down, and mobile users need an Apple or they go without.
ABC, otherwise known as American Broadcasting Company, is owned by The Walt Disney Company and partners with some of the top networking stations in the United States. It was founded in 1943 by the former NBC blue radio station and has headquarters based in New York City. Its first broadcast was in 1948. Through many struggles in the early days of broadcasting, ABC was determined to keep its status as one of the top broadcasting stations in the United States. With the rise of the internet, they have found a solid means to reach viewers in additional ways.
Partners and Rights
Now partnering with The Disney Channel, ESPN, ABC Family, and SOAPnet, ABC now manages 86 hours of programming scheduled per week. It is home to many popular prime time, daytime, and children’s programs. It has special program rights to the Academy Awards, American Music Awards, Disney Parks Christmas Day parade, Tournament of Roses parade, Country Music Association Awards, and the CMA Music Festival. It is also the first network station to provide full episodes viewable from their website in 2006. In 2007 they began presenting video in HD.
Their website is very nicely designed with an easy to follow layout. They provide full information on all of their episodes by providing sub-sites for each episode within their main site. There will never be fear of losing track of your favorite shows as plenty of information for scheduling and background is available for all ABC programming. Currently, the ABC network offers the latest episodes of 28 different shows. They feature the latest episodes of these shows just in case you missed your favorite program. The episodes available are always current but tend to only go back as far as a month. While it is possible to catch up on the latest episode you will not be able to catch up on the whole season. But no matter, this site is still excellent for those who cannot be in front of their televisions at the scheduled time of their favorite show. This is an excellent feature. You can watch your shows later in that evening or even later in the week. There may also be a random episode of the show such as the pilot to get familiar with the program. Also available are clips and teasers for their popular shows.
The ABC Network site does offer a free membership option that will allow each member to view exclusive video not available to non-members. Membership is absolutely free and you will be provided with additional information on ABC programming. Membership also includes a free newsletter jam packed with additional information concerning programming as well as the actors of the shows. One additional feature is the ability to speed up the signup process and become a member by using your Facebook and Twitter information.
The ABC network provides apps for other popular devices so you can catch all your favorite shows on the run. Episodes can be watched at the office, in the park, or anywhere at all. Apps are completely free and available for the iPad and the iPhone. Apple’s iCloud technology will allow you to remember what you have already watched. Full programming schedules for all episodes are available as listings within the app. Some episodes include closed captions and show thumbnails for episodes available. The app will also provide information for time remaining so you can watch your show before it expires. The downside to the app is the fact that it is only available on Apple iOS devices, Android fans will not be impressed.
The ABC network website makes it possible to listen to music available on the award shows they have the rights to as mentioned above. Listen to the latest hits from your favorite country music stars as well as soundtracks from some of the shows.
This website has a full ecommerce store to purchase t-shirts, clothing apparel, as well as other memorabilia of your favorite shows. Other items that can be purchased include cups, toys, and DVDs. All purchases take place with a secure transaction; information is completely safe. The store offers a separate newsletter to keep up to date on special offers and discounts for merchandise as well as news when new items are added. They accept all major credit cards and will ship items purchases directly to your home.
All in all, this is a great site. There is no charge to watch streaming episodes and a free membership provides additional opportunity to watch even more video. They provide an excellent means to watch missed episodes allowing you to live your life by your own schedule and not the schedule of TV programming. Episodes can be watched whenever you find the time. With the free apps provided these videos can even be watched on the go. Free television, free music and free apps, what more could you ask for?
