Slingbox 500: Review
In this review
The Slingbox 500 was created to enhance off-line cable subscription by allowing users to watch television on their computer screen.
The Slingbox 500 can be purchased for about $300. Sling box is known to have many features available and is excellent for extending functionality of a television by expanding off-line cable subscription services. Where similar products on the market allow users to watch streaming media from their Internet services on their home television screen, Slingbox 500 does the reverse and allows users to watch their cable subscription services on their computer.
Different from similar products on the market the Slingbox 500 is not box shaped. Sling media decided to change the design of the products due to a large amount of complaints of the system overheating. Actually, with older models having a flat surface on top, users were setting things on the unit causing it to overheat. This no longer happens with the newer Slingbox 500 models.
The Slingbox 500 comes complete with a remote control, AC adapter, HDMI cable, component and composite video cables, stereo RCA audio cables, an Ethernet cable, and an instruction manual. The contents of this package alone set this product apart from most other products of this nature on the market. Unlike other systems, no additional cords will need to be purchased separately. An internal IR Blaster is included for controlling the cable box issued from your off-line cable service company. If there are issues with this cable, Sling Media has included the cable used in earlier models of the Sling box as an alternative.
Sling box can be connected via 802.11b/g/n networks with 2.4GHz or 5GHz channels with no issues at all. Almost instantly, the remote control will be able to access the Slingbox 500 interface. At that point, it will be necessary to input location and zip code so the unit can scan for placement of the off-line cable subscription provider. Once this has taken place, Slingbox 500 will load the appropriate remote control options. Users will be instructed to test the programming of the remote control to be sure everything is in order. In most cases, there will be no issue bring up the channels and TV schedules. At this point you can switch channels very easily.
The remote control include with Slingbox 500 is very light weight without being cheaply made. There is no backlight on the remote control unit and the buttons included are only for necessary function. The remote control includes the home button located at the top of the remote, an oversize five way control pad, play, stop, pause, seek, and a keypad.
Performance of video you can vary greatly depending on the strength of your network connection. From our experience, it's better to use the 5GHz than the 2.4GHz settings. But in most cases, Slingbox 500 does an amazing job of providing excellent video content no matter how the Internet connection used. In fact, users will be pleased to find playback over WiFi signals is exceptional. Users will enjoy a picture that is high quality, crisp and clean whether the resolution is 720p or1080p. Changing channels may take place slowly, but otherwise there is no issue with the remote control.
Both setup and performance of the Slingbox 500 is very similar to their earlier models. Although Sling Media has made a lot of improvements in their Slingbox 500 model, the older models were known to work very will also. The Slingbox 500 can change channels much quicker than earlier versions even though it is still a bit sluggish. The channel changing was the biggest issue we found with this system. It may take up to a few seconds before videos begin playing and may even stop changing channels all together in some cases. If this happens, it can be remedied by implementing the information of the off-line cable service once again and changing channels manually.
Slingbox 500 is a very nice product, but not intended for those wishing to eliminate their off-line cable subscription service. Slingbox 500 is intended to extend your cable subscriptions. This unit works whether your television set is on or not. However, when viewing Sling box from your computer the channel cannot be changed from the television or viewing will be disrupted. This means only one viewer can watch television at a time as the television will be tied up when Sling box is in use whether it is on or not.
However, even these features can be extended by choosing to download various browsers from Slingbox.com. In addition, plug-ins can be purchased for separate clients so additional content can be available. Some of these plugins include setups for clients such as WD TV Media Players, the Logitech Revue with Google TV, and the Boxee Box. It's even possible to embed content from Slingbox 500 into websites and social networks. Overall, we found very little issues with the Slingbox 500. It behaved exactly the way it was supposed to.
