LG LED Google TV: Review
In this review
LG has integrated Google TV with their interface. Sadly, the picture quality is subpar.
The biggest feature of this system is its integration with Google TV. If you’re not familiar with Google TV, it extends functionality of your television by adding capabilities to view computer like functions, like Chrome browsing, on your larger television screen. Access to Google Play apps, web browsing, and Google search can now be used on multiple platforms all at your finger tips. This LG model stands out from the crowd because it has integrated Smart TV capabilities with Google TV’s user interface. The result brings its users the best of both worlds that operates with an LG menu but acts look Google TV.
For connection purposes this system comes with a variety of ports. It includes four HMDI ports, three USB ports, LAN port, legacy A/V adapter, inputs for audio and video, and a wireless internet adapter. Aside from Google TV, LG has included other functionalities and technology. It includes 3D capability, a dual-core processor and ISF-level picture calibration controls. It simulates 120Hz with “Trumotion 120 Hz” that is actually a 60 Hz coupled with smoothing technology. This system includes a remote control unit that includes a QWERTY keyboard on the rear panel.
Unfortunately, set up may take a bit of time as the set up wizard is a little drawn out. Users are required to input their address, ZIP code, cable or satellite provider, model of your cable or satellite box and the Wi-Fi password. At that point it will be needed to sort through possible remote control codes to connect to your devices before TV watching can finally begin. Furthermore, the wizard won’t always catch all of the needed information when it is input the first time; it may be needed to add information a second time. When you finally have all of the correct information in place, set up is not quite finished yet—more steps are needed. Login information for services such as Netflix will need to put in at a later time and this must be handled in each individual application. Google TV will not be able to search these services until login information is added.
Setup may be somewhat difficult, but the LG certainly makes up for that with picture quality. Most users will agree the picture quality is amazing, at least at first. The picture is most often described as “popping” but sadly, as usage continues that quality begins to decrease. For starters, one of the first issues we noticed with black levels that appeared murky and undertones of gray shades around the edges of the screen. Additionally, there are some issues with colors interacting such as white text on a black background. Plainly put there were issues with light bleeding from all edges of the screen.
There were additional issues with full color quality. It was not long before we realized why the color was so attractive at first. The color in the picture is overblown and explodes with vibrant color. But after some time of usage, the color began to need adjustments as it would fatigue. However, adjustments to remedy the overblown color were not possible with this model.
The troubles with appearances of Google TV were only the beginning of the issues we experienced. Unfortunately, the loading of web pages was extremely slow and scrolling was also dreadfully slow. We found the browser was reacting slowly to the requests we were inputting and by the time we became aware of the lag time, the pages would begin to scroll past what we were searching for. Navigation forced us to deal with a lot of bouncing on the screen, and that got old very fast.
Unfortunately, we wish it were possible to write a more favorable conclusion for this model. What began as an exceptional quality picture soon was lost and our experience with the Google TV was also not very pleasant. IN fact, we found the entire experience with the viewing quality disrupted our outlook of the entire model. The conflicts between whites and blacks were distracting and the bleeding colors were also very disappointing. The performance left much to be desired.
Once we were able to navigate Google successfully, the Google TV search feature was handled very nicely. Finding content was very easy. Also, the interface of Google TV coupled with LG’s menu was also very nice. Unfortunately, this was overshadowed by image quality of this model. If the picture quality had been better, we would have had fewer issues. But since picture quality is so important, this model does not come highly recommended. There are other devices that may be more feasible for Google TV in the form of set up boxes. But if you are looking for Google TV that is incorporated into the TV itself, this may be the best model available, at least for now.
