Hi all

I am using a spare PC for a HTPC. I have the PC setup and a massive hard drive but now i need advice on what operating system to install. It will either be Windows 7 or Linux. I am interested in fast bootup, playing DVD's and browsing the web. I might play some games as well..?

You will find fans of Windows 7 and fans of Linux. I go for linux because it's free and loads superfast straight into XBMC. I suggest you install OpenELEC, which is a small linux and XBMC install that will run on most devices. OpenELEC boots fast, and the install will turn a blank PC into a media machine in less than 15 minutes.

It's completely free
A full install is only 80-125MB
Minimal hardware requirements
Simple install to HDD, SSD, Compact Flash, SD card, pen drive or other
Optimized builds for Atom, ION, Intel, Fusion and more
Simple configuration through the XBMC interface
Plug and Play external storage
File sharing out of the box
