YouView Release Delayed By Technical Difficulties
It seems that the much anticipated release of the IPTV project Youview could be held up for several months, or may even not arrive until 2012. Reports in the Daily Mail say that the video-on-demand project has been dogged with technical problems and also alleged differences of opinion between the different partners.
The joint-venture hoped to release it’s YouView set-top boxes in the first half of 2011 but this has slipped by around six months, pushing launch to late 2011 or early 2012.
The YouView was hoping to finally hit the shelves this summer after a number of transformations, from project Kangaroo (which was killed by the competition commission), to project Canvas, the service has been plagued with problems and complaints. However it seemed that all systems were go for a launch in mid 2011.
The YouView box promises to bring an open source system comprising catch up tv, dvr and internet services to UK viewers. The system would allow true tv-on-demand, allowing viewers to browse forwards and backwards through the programme guide. However it was seen as a threat by it’s subscription based competitors Virgin and Sky TV.
IF they are unable to roll the service out in time it will be a major setback as this is the year that connected tv will take off. There was debate over who would launch in the UK first, Google TV or YouView. The partners are in agreement though, the service will not be released until it is ready to roll.
