The impact that the Disney/Pixar 3D animated movie Toy Story had on the film industry with its launch in 1995 cannot be understated (and has given birth to a string of high-quality sequels and other projects from Pixar), and the legacy of this first-ever computer-animated feature continues to this day, with a creative duo on YouTube offering their own version of the modern classic made in a ‘live-action’ format.
The YouTube channel jonasonsMovies (created by Arizona-based pair Jonason Pauley and Jesse Perrotta), are said to have spent 2 years on the project, which is 80 minutes long (just about in keeping with the movie’s official runtime).
The video’s official description reads: “The Live Action Pixar Toy Story movie, shot-for-shot, with real people and real toys.”
Made with the real-life toy versions of the characters used in the movie, original creators Pixar have treated the fan service with respect, and gave the duo official permission to use the film’s original audio with the newly-filmed content which seems to be a well put-together recreation of the original almost ‘frame-by-frame’, as a mixture of acting (for humans), stop-motion animation (for distance shots), and puppetry (for close-ups of the toys, though whether the clear lack of quality in that department is played for comic effect like in the film Team America: World Police is up for debate).
Uploaded this Saturday (12 January), ‘Live Action Toy Story’ has already seen over 1,000,000 views at the time of writing and seems set to become a viral sensation for the channel with a project that seems to have been long in the making, amongst the pair’s other projects which seem to include plenty of fan-made remakes of content produced by YouTube comedy pair Rhett & Link, and a number of videos relating to classic movies, including one in which they try to recreate the ‘parade’ scene from 1985 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
The Ferris Bueller tribute, along with the Toy Story full remake and a previous project which saw them take on the last scene of Toy Story 3 in a similar manner, can be seen below. Now they can move on to even more ambitious Pixar film remakes, like Bugs’ Life or Finding Nemo, perhaps…
