Youtube To Broadcast Channel 4 TV Shows
British TV network Channel 4 and Youtube have agreed a landmark deal, allowing the video giant to broadcast (in full) hit tv shows such as Skins, Peep show and soap opera Hollyoaks.
Negotiations have been ongoing for over six months, and will mean that Youtube are able to stream the Channel 4 content from its 4oD online catch up tv service after airing on television.
Viewers on YouTube will be able to view the tv shows for free and Channel 4 will make a cut of the revenue generated from advertising during the content. Channel 4 are also making available over 3000 hours of archived shows and content including hit shows such as Brass Eye, Derren Brown and Gordon Ramsay Kitchen Nightmares amongst others.
The co-operation between online giant and major network will continue for a three year period with Channel 4 and YouTube sharing ad revenues “on an agreed formula”. Channel 4 said that the agreement will also see it sell ads around some non-Channel 4 content on YouTube as well.
“Making our programmes directly accessible to YouTube’s 20 million UK users will financially benefit both Channel 4 and our independent production partners and help bolster our investment in quality British content,” said Andy Duncan, the Channel 4 chief executive.
“It demonstrates our ability to strike dynamic commercial partnerships to help underpin our future as a commercially funded, not-for-profit multi-platform public service network.”
The Channel 4 content will be completely available via YouTube in early 2010. The deal is though not exclusive, meaning Channel 4 can carry on distributing its shows via the 4oD tv service and Channel4.com, and anywhere else it chooses.
YouTube who last week announced it was serving more than 1 billion video streams every day.said that the partnership was the first time any broadcaster had moved to provide a comprehensive catch up TV service on its service. YouTube is also looking to move away from short, funny videos, to full length premium content.
Channel 4 seem to be as much as saying that their catch up tv service is underperforming so they need Youtube’s pulling power to get viewers.
