Youtube Positions Itself As A Pay To View Service
Youtube have been slowly evolving their video site, so slowly that you may have missed it. First they started streaming full music concerts, then they began streaming catch up tv on their website. And now they are testing a pay to view service. YouTube have launched a streaming video on demand service, supplying viewers with movies and tv shows for a price of between $0.99-$3.99.
As with their last pay to view offering, the majority of video’s are small, independent and Bollywood. It could be that they are saving the good stuff for when the service gets officially launched. YouTube have previously trialled pay to view with their $5 rentals of Sundance titles earlier this year, although that experiment only generated $10,000 in rental income.
Youtube are entering a crowded market, and will be competing with Netflix and the new Hulu subscription service. However, in their favor they have massive traffic that the competition would kill for. Their is no doubt that Youtube are taking online tv very seriously, and with the backing they have only an idiot would bet against them dominating it.
