Youtube To Take On Broadcasters By Adding TV Channels
Youtube are slowly erasing their reputation as a funny clips video site and are now planning to take on TV broadcasters at their own game. The video giant plan to launch over a dozen new TV channels showing premium content that will make viewers ditch the TV set.
Reported by the Wall Street Journal, it appears that Youtube’s owner Google, are in final negotiations for the channels, which should be ready to roll out in early 2012. The WSJ says that the move is all a part of YouTube’s major plan to “to reposition the web video juggernaut as a more formidable competitor to TV”.
YouTube have already made many moves to show long-form content and get away from it’s earlier tarnished reputation, of a silly video website. They have already started streaming live content via YouTube Live which incorporates sports services and the possibility of live TV. This deal is another step and Google are said to be paying major money to the new content providers who will also share get a share of advertising revenue.
Youtube desperately want to get a piece of the advertising action that rival Hulu enjoys. The new TV channels are said to consist of popular content such as fashion, sport and movies all showing like a standard TV channel. These Youtube are hoping will attract big advertising revenue.
Although Hulu has much lower traffic numbers and is ranked ninth (compared to Youtube at number 1), with a mere 26 million viewers compared to 162 million for Google owned websites. It makes much more revenue from advertising, which is no real surprise when you can watch premium content on the site.
Youtube already have a movie rental service as well as a free movie selection. They will be hoping the addition of TV channels will be a further boost to their ambition of replacing your TV set.
