Yahoo widgets finally appearing on Samsung TV sets

The much lauded Yahoo TV Widgets enabled hardware is finally making an appearance. Since our report ‘ Yahoo internet TV widget showing in your TV soon‘.

Although Yahoo calls it’s Software app ‘TV Widgets’, Samsung who are launching an enabled TV are calling the feature ‘Internet@TV’. The feature gives viewers access to internet services whilst watching TV. Features such as Flickr photos, Youtube, weather, Facebook etc.

Viewers access the internet services using the TV widgets which are overlaid across the TV screen. Viewers can also enable/disable and download new widgets using a remote control.

The new Samsung TV’s with the service dont come cheap though. Samsungs Website reveals they will feature in four LED TV sets – A 55 inch, $3,800 UN55B7100 and UN55B7000 models and the smaller 46 inch models, $3,000 UN46B7100 and UN46B7000.

The widget service was devised jointly by Yahoo and Intel, debuting at the CES Show in January. However, Yahoo plans to make TV Widgets available on TV sets that do not posess Intel processors as well.

Yahoo are planning to offer advertising using their new technology as well in the future and more devices enabled with widgets are soon to be released by Vizio,LG and Sony has also revealed Widget plans Yahoo has revealed.

Although it looks pretty swish on a 55 inch TV set, it is an unproven technology that seems not as good as just watching TV online from your PC. The Widget Engine is also known as a resource hungry app requiring large amounts of memory.

But if there is enough take up then this technology could prove a winner. The advice would be to see how it goes.
