Yahoo Widgets Coming To Sony Bravia TV Sets
Yahoo announced their internet widgets system for tv hardware around 100 years ago (OK, im exagerrating a little), but now they are appearing in tv sets everywhere. The latest being Sony Bravia televisions. This adds to the current partnerships that include LG, Samsung, VIZIO and HiSense, putting Yahoo! Widgets into five of the top ten LCD TV manufacturers worldwide.
The deal comes not long after Sony partnered with Google to announce Google TV, leading to a little confusion as to which direction Sony are heading with LCD Internet TV. Although Yahoo got in early, Google has a much more extensive video catalog than Yahoo!, and that could be a major advantage when it is released. On the other hand, Yahoo Widgets require less processing power than Google TV so they may have an advantage in being installed on lower-end televisions, whereas Google TV seems to be more for high-end TVs. Although all new televisions being released are pretty much high end now.
Since announcing the widget system, Yahoo have a lot more competition from Microsoft’s Xbox, Apple TV and other platforms such as Boxee. But Yahoo are stuill a big name and have that early advantage, and they are proven to work. It is possible that Yahoo’s Widgets will continue to be integrated into TVs, maybe in conjunction with other platforms, including Google TV.
As it is a well known fact that viewers want internet access on their tv, it could well develop into giving viewers the choice of many services, from Yahoo widgets, Hulu, Boxee or Google TV and switch between them. Or it could end up with manufacturers seeing which one is more popular and dropping the rest.
