Xfinity Streampix Compliments Comcast Online Viewing Services
Netflix and Hulu will be getting a little tougher competition as US cable company Comcast are launching a complimentary subscription based streaming service called Xfinity Streampix which will be available this week and is hoped will ward off potential cord cutters.
The service will allow customers to watch complete seasons of TV shows and movies on a selection of devices and screens in and out of the home. Comcast have partnered with a number of content providers and movie studios including ABC Television, Disney, Warner Bros, NBC, Cookie Jar and Sony Pictures amongst others.
The new Streampix service will be a compliment to the existing services supplying around 75,000 titles using the Xfinity app, the Xfinity On Demand, service, the Anyplay live streaming home network and through the XfinityTV.com website.
The service will cost existing Comcast customers $5 monthly and will be offered free with TV and internet packages. Streampix will at launch run on PC,Mac, iPhone and iPad devices, and support for consoles and Android will follow.
Speaking about the online service, Marcien Jenckes, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Comcast Video Services said, “Xfinity TV is a one-stop source for the most video entertainment on any screen and it just keeps getting better. Our goal is to consistently deliver greater value to our customers and to bring the best anytime, anywhere entertainment on multiple platforms. Streampix is another step moving TV Everywhere forward by giving customers access to an even greater library of popular choices to watch.”
As Streampix will be a free service for existing customers, Comcast will hope it prevents subscribers from heading over to rival streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Unless they rapidly make significant improvements, I doubt this is going to be more than a passing curiosity to a small demographic of Xfinity’s current customer base. There’s neither enough content nor enough options. They need to step up there game because there are plenty of both content and options with the Blockbuster @Home service. That’s why I’ve been really happy with it since my employer, DISH released it. It has a nice selection of streaming content, a bunch of high definition movie channels, and (my favorite) by-mail rentals of games and movies that can be taken into a Blockbuster store and exchanged. That, in my opinion, is value, because it gives me real options and rounds out my entertainment selection. In comparison, Xfinity’s Streampix is pretty underwhelming.
