World Cup Breaks Online Viewing Records

World Cup online streaming breaks records

Spain may have taken the glory in the the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but online broadcasters are basking in the glory of attracting record audiences with their live streams of this year’s football tournament. With the use of online viewing even more prominent than 4 year’s previously,  some of the key statistics from various broadcasters include:

  • ESPN3 clocked nearly 7.4 million unique viewers totalling around 15.7 million hours of viewing. This included 355,000 people per minute tuning in for the semifinal match between Germany and Spain, resulting in ESPN3′s largest average audience ever for a live online sporting event.
  • Univision claim that its Univisionfutbol.com site was a big hit as well, with more than 10 million hours of live feed throughout the month-long tournament. This came to an average of 90 minutes on the site each day per user. Univision also tracked a combined 34.7 million visits to its online and mobile content during the period.
  • Conviva managed some 200 million video views from 30 million unique viewers of live streams offered by their various international broadcasts, a total of 50 million hours of video viewed.
  • Twitter saw a lot of engagement throughout the tournament. Tracking up to 6 million World Cup–related terms each day, not a record-breaker by Twittter standards, yet still impressive.
  • Nielsen measured ratings for the official FIFA website, which was the biggest hit in Brazil, where 7 percent of all Internet users, or 2.8 million people total, frequented it for World Cup updates. The FIFA site was also hugely popular in the U.K. (6.9 percent of all British Internet users / 2.7 million people) and Switzerland (5.6 percent of all Swiss Internet users / 0.25 million people).
  • MobiTV, which offers mobile access to live TV programming via a paid monthly subscription, managed to stream 1.8 million hours of ESPN Mobile TV during the month-long period of the World Cup (including other sporting events), meaning that for Mobi TV, like may other online broadcasters, was “the biggest live event to date”.

This trend can only rise, as both broadcasters and viewers get more comfortable with internet streaming. In four years time at the next world cup there could be a real risk of server meltdown.

  4. already displayed growing faith in the technology after screening several matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 3D, so the addition of NBA in 3D was bound to have come sooner or later, as armchair fans :)

  5. isnt it a shame we cant afford to go to live matches like we did in the old days, i miss the atmasphere and you could see what support was there ? there is nothing like the real thing shame.

  6. I’m not sure about all this online viewing, because it must use a lot of bandwidth. Internet space cannot be infinite, so aren’t you bringing saturation point closer.

I agree with Gerry, there is no atmosphere unless you go to a live match. Crowds there are falling, isn’t this because it’s too easy to sit at home in front of a screen.

    Not good

  7. 355k people per minute – thats INSANE!

  8. Who says that soccer is not popular in the US? It is definetely an amazing sport and I love watching it.

  9. Yeah, soccer is gaining popularity here in the US. I asked our server at a restaurant the other night if it was always packed, and he said only on soccer games nights. Its really big to watch the match down at the pubs. He said they were thinking of having private rooms where people could reserve for their friends.

Some of the new camera shots they are doing makes you feel like you are virtual on the field with th players.

  13. Soccer is going to be more popular in the US than football in a few years. The viewing rates are incredible. Best sport on earth.

  14. ONline tv is the future and we need to accept it. Just look at yourself, don`t you look at the videos when you are on a news site?

  15. I still think football is a social game and people get more and more social in watching it, so think of crowds ands crwods of people huddled together somewhere in the city watching the game together rather than people getting behind the pc or ipad.

  16. Football is the biggest and best sport in the world, so why be surprised that it keeps breaking viewing records
