ABC are going to be letting their hilarious obstacle-based gameshow ”Wipeout” take on the coveted winter schedule, the first time that the reality show will be screening new episodes away from the summer season.

Starting in January, “Wipeout” will carry a “winter wonderland” theme for the course, built with ice as an added challenge to new stunts like ‘Spanker Sleds’, ’Wipeout Ski Lift’, and ’Polar Bear Run’. Host network ABC have ordered 8 episodes for the start of 2011, seen as an extension to the series now-24 episode 4th season (the remaining episodes will be summer-themed like all previous series).

The Endemol USA-produced show averaged around 9.2 million viewers during the Tuesday evening run last summer, so it is clear to see why ABC want to use their series to boost their winter line-up.

Since its debut in 2008, Endemol has seen the ”‘Wipeout” franchise expand around the world, with national versions now being screened in Australia, England, Canada, and Sweden. Endemol USA chairman David Goldberg stated: ”It’s exciting to see the brand expanding, I’m thrilled that fans of the summer version will now be able to get their fix of laughs and wipeouts set in a winter wonderland.”
