Whats The Deal With Amazon Vs Netflix?
Everyone seems to have an opinion on the so called battle happening between Amazon and Netflix, started when Amazon finally threw their hat into the subscription online tv ring. Their proverbial ‘toe in the water’ was to offer Prime members 5000 hours of streaming tv and movies. So whats the big deal? you ask. After all, Amazon have been offering tv and movies on demand forever.
Hard to tell apart
Well the big deal is that now Amazon are effectively offering a subscription service that can easily be adapted to a monthly subscription a’la Netflix and Hulu Plus, although Hulu are becoming less of a competitor every day. Even more interesting is the revelation that Netflix currently use Amazon infrastructure to deliver their streaming content to customers!
The fact that Netflix in effect outsources a chunk of operations to Amazon means that we dont know who is the organ and who is the monkey grinder anymore. Im not sure how easy it would be for Netflix to move it’s infrastructure elsewhere, but i hear it would be tough. This means that Amazon could not only compete, but seriously undercut it’s rival. All it needs is some premium content to lure Netflix members away and boom.
This may be why Netflix have so frantically been hoovering up any content deal it can recently.

I think they will be fine, both individually. So Netflix may outsource its content, who doesn’t? I have been a long time subscriber and employee of DISH, and I will say that GTV is flying into the homes of customers by the thousands! I got one recently and I love that it comes pre loaded with all the things I need. With the OTA upgrades it will eventually be easier to pick and choose what I would like to have on there. I cant wait!
Unfortunately, Amazon video on-demand won’t work with PPC Macs running OSX (no future Flash support from Adobe is the limiting factor).
