Watching TV On Mobile Brings UK Network 3G To The Brink Of Collapse

The rising popularity of new smartphones that can stream TV and Youtube videos has brought the UK’s 3G mobile network to a near standstill.

Thanks to new phones like the iPhone and it’s many clones have crashed 3G mobile networks all across the UK. Top mobile phone provider O2 which supplies the iphone in the UK has revealed that mobile web useage is up 18 times on last years demand. They had to spend £½ BILLION to cater for the increased demand. Other top network Vodaphone has also struggled to cope with demand.

O2 technology chief Derek McManus explained: “Watching a YouTube video on a smartphone can use the same capacity on the network as sending 500,000 text messages simultaneously.

“In the past 12 months the mobile industry has seen an unprecedented change in demand.”

The biggest factors for the networks crashing is the growing popularity of watching live TV online via services such as the BBC iPlayer and YouTube who have apps running on all the new smartphones.

The astonishing useage of the networks is revealed when you consider that viewing 30 minutes of online streams is the equivalent to sending 78,000 emails.

Internet service providers believe by then that sites like the BBC’s iPlayer will simply grind to a halt unless Britain’s creaking broadband network is upgraded, with old copper wiring replaced by fibre optics.

Research shows Britain is not ready for tomorrow’s technology. Cisco claims it is 31st out of 66 countries – including Taiwan and Latvia – when it comes to speed.

Charlie Ponsonby, chief of broadband comparison company Simplifydigital.co.uk, said: “There is a clear pattern emerging, with Scandinavia, eastern Europe and the Asian tiger economies having far better developed broadband infrastructures.”

This may explain why all the networks now have a ‘fair use’ policy on data limits via a mobile. And hit users with big charges for going over.
