Watching free internet tv and catch up TV is great isnt it? Especially the great Hulu website showing all the greatest TV shows. However, if your a non US resident then you must be cursing every time you hear the name Hulu. Because you cannot watch it outside the US can you? Well actually, yes you can so long as you know what your doing and dont mind a little hassle to get going.
Because of copyright laws and license agreements going on around the world, the website checks your IP address and if you are anywhere other than within the US then you get the dreaded message saying your unable to view.
Watch Hulu and you can watch full TV episodes and movies from NBC, Fox, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros, MGM, Lionsgate and more. Top shows include Battlestar Galactica, The Simpsons, Naruto, Bones, House, Arrested Development, Prison Break, Family Guy, The Office, Saturday Night Live, The Colbert Report, American Dad amongst many other TV greats.
So now that your appetite is suitably wetted, how do you watch Hulu outside the US? Well heres where we get technical and talk about proxies and Virtual Private Servers.
Watching Hulu outside the USA
Now the first option is a software product that creates a virtual private network. This fools Hulu into not realising your outside the USA. Just install and run HotSpot Shield, in your taskbar you will see a small icon. Mouse over and right click, connect to Hulu and start watching great TV.
HotSpot Shield is a little erratic and only has a miserly 8GB bandwith limit so you may only be able to watch a few shows or movies before you have to stop
Another way to watch Hulu is to download Ultrareach. The idea behind this product is to allow users of the world to enjoy the internet, especially in highly policed countries. After running it will connect you to a US proxy and therefore allow you to watch Hulu in peace
Ultrareach can affect your antivirus software and you may get many warnings from your PC but it is fine to use
Next is AlwaysVPN (which at time of posting is temporarily down). This is a free to use virtual private network that passes all of your internet useage through it in a similar way to Hotspot.

So there you have it. It is possible to watch Hulu from anywhere in the world. The solution is available, just not so simple. But until they sort out the stupid restrictions of useage its all you got.

Hulu recently banned hotshield users from accessing their site. There are still dozens of paid alternatives though. The one I use when I’m traveling is http://www.hidemynet.com , it’s a low fee of 5 USD per month and I’ve never had any problems using it.
Hula can now detect the ultra search and says that i am attempting to access though an anonymous proxy tool

I have ignored using a proxy server, because even though it will work. Just google “proxy servers”, but it is wayy toooo slooooooooow.
Using Firefox and blocked ports
Another more neater option is using a Firefox plugin and blocking some ports. While this method takes longer to implement it also allows access to other country-restricting websites such as the BBC Player. Here’s how you do it:
1. Download and install the “Modify Headers” add-on for Firefox.
2. Go to Tools > Modify Headers in Firefox and insert a new filter by clicking “add”. For the first field input “X-Forwarded-For”. In the second field put the IP address of a website located in the US (don’t use 12.13.14.15, Hulu has blocked it).
3. Enable the filter
4. Now its time to block a couple of ports: TCP and UDP port 1935. For Linux and Mac you can do it via the Terminal window:-
Commands for Linux:
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp –dport 1935 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -p udp –dport 1935 -j DROP
Commands for Mac:
sudo ipfw add 0 deny tcp from any to any 1935
sudo ipfw add 0 deny udp from any to any 1935

I know that this method works in UK, Ireland and Canada, other countries should work fine too.
Make sure that you disable the blocks when not in use or you may have trouble accessing other Flash-based websites.
Heres another way to try that works at this time!!
Go to how-to-hide-ip.info then install the Firefox Web browser, then install the Modify Headers plugin to Firefox. Next, click Tools in Firefox, and then click Modify Headers.
After this a new window appears, and after clicking Add in the drop down menu enter the line ‘X-Forwarded-For’ in the first box, ‘12.13.14.15′ in the second, and leave the third blank.
Click on Configuration and make sure Always On is checked. Then you can go to Hulu.com and watch tv episodes all day long.
Followed every instruction for the modify headers add on using the link you gave for windows users and it said that i did not have a valid Ip for the “Filter” I created
I was looking for such option (to watch hulu anytime, anywhere) for a long, long time. I have tried many different ways off connecting (TOR, Proxies, Hotspotshied) but all of them were slow, time consuming to setup (I was spending more time setting stuff up than watching stuff) or not working (imagine how annoying it is – you’re wasting 30-40 min. to download stuff, read instructions and so on and so on… just to find out that hulu is still not working). With all those half measures speed is also big problem – as it turns out you need to wait 5 min to buffer video up in order to watch for a 30 seconds.
(which is cool because on iPhone you can watch BBC iPlayer)

I have looked at other – paid for – options. Tried few of them and I have to honestly say. HideIP VPN (hideipvpn.com) is the best.
1. Price is very reasonable.
2. Beside US IP you can get UK IP (to watch bbc or itv or listen to spotify!).
3. Speed is awesome since they got servers all over the US.
4. Can be used as VPN (for all net traffic) or proxy.
5. Support and help is great – I even got help from them on Sunday once.
6. Works on me netbook, works on my iPhone!!!
7. That is the best – no more fear!!! With their service I can use torrents again
Overall… for a few bucks a month I got great and versatile service – worth every penny/cent/drahma

All you need to do is get a VPN (virtual private network) that gives you your own IP address like the one offered at VPN4all.com This allows you to browse the internet freely by traveling with your own IP address.
VPN’s are so easy to setup. Takes care of this problem easily. I prefer HMA VPN, but StrongVPN is another good solution.
