History of the Champions League

Formerly known as the European cup, the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions League was originally a competition only for the football champions of each country to enter. The idea was thought up by Frenchman Gabriel Hanot in 1955 and became a resounding success across Europe.

The format was altered in the 1992-1993 season (many think because of money and to stop a European super league being created), the name was changed to the UEFA Champions League and changed to its current structure whereby the clubs dont need to be league champions for their country, just one of the top 3 or 4 performers in their own league to get a UEFA Champions League place. Although derised by the purists the move increased the Champions’ League popularity and increased its fan base.
