Warner Brothers Bring More Top Movie Rentals To Facebook

Famed movie production company, Warner Bros., through their Digital Distribution division (WBDD), have announced an expansion to their platform of video-on-demand and electronic sales content, and are doing so by adding to their trial partnership with Facebook.

The movies will be avaliable for rental via the official Warner Bros. Entertainment ‘Facebook Movie’ Page, with interested users able to make an online purchase via ‘Facebook Credits’. The five new released films are reported to include the first two segments in the Harry Potter series, and films made in 2010 including popular dream-based hit Inception, Life as We Know It, and Yogi Bear. The service is currently US-only, though, but it is likely that success in this secondary trial will convince the two new partners to take their revolutionary concept worldwide.

It is claimed by the company that the renting is an instantaneous process, with the 48-hour rental beginning seconds after they hit the confirm button, with full pausing and screen size options, with the service also remembering to pick up where you left off when you next log on to the site. The fact that it is being hosted by Facebook also gives the users a chance to place live comments on the film at hand, as well as all the usual Facebook activities, such as interacting with friends, and updating their status.

The ‘digital distribution president’ of Warner Bros., Thomas Gewecke, said of the new deal: “Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”

David Raycroft, an executive for social commerce company Milyoni, who are assisting with the facilitation of the movies rented on Facebook, said of Facebook’s future plans for online broadcasting: “The plan is to expand the market. We are in discussions with other [movie marketers], as well as television and live-broadcasting events producers.”

With this progress in social media and movies ongoing, could Facebook be emerging as a serious challenger to the likes of Hulu and Netflix in the online streaming world?
