Virgin To Hit The Big Billion This Year
Virgin Media had a pretty good 2010 and expect even better things in 2011 for it’s vod platform according to an internal report. The new entertainment trends report from Virgin is making the prediction that online views will hit the big 1 billion by the years end.
The online streaming arm of Virgin saw a 10% increase in 2010 hitting around 900 million TV shows on demand. Around 64% of the UK’s cable subscribers also use the online tv on demand platform and between them saw around 430 million hours of content in 2010.
Virgin stated that if on demand which was launched 4 years back, was a TV channel then it would be the third highest viewed by subscribers. It currently is used by over a million homes and accounts for one fifth of all iPlayer requests last year according to the BBC.
Cindy Rose of Virgin Media said:- “In our increasingly time precious lives, more and more people are switching over to On Demand. It’s a chance to catch-up on something you missed earlier in the week or just watch what you really want at a time that suits you. This year looks set to be transformational in terms of how we watch our favourite shows and I expect we’ll break through the milestone of one billion views in the coming months.”
Virgins new TiVo powered set-top box is proving to be a big hit with customers giving a seamless blend of traditional and online content in a cutting edge electronic programme guide. Interestingly Virgin were critical of YouView but are now offering a lot of what the platform promised.
