Viewers Prefer Netflix To Hulu Spending Twice As Long On The Site
Some good news for under fire Netflix as a new Comscore report shows that viewers prefer the streaming website to rival Hulu.
So while Netflix may be losing subscribers by the bucketful and the ceo has had to take a wage cut, this news will have Netflix execs jumping for joy and Hulu’s drowning their sorrows.
In November, 2011, comScore estimates that Netflix.com attracted 26.6 million unique visitors, versus 20.2 million for Hulu
So down to numbers, the report says that in the US viewers were on the Netflix website for a billion minutes compared to a measly 480 million minutes on rival service Hulu.
The news is even more surprising when you consider the Hulu site is actually free to visit and stream a large proportion of content, whereas Netflix is a paid service!
During the she period comScore estimates visitor numbers to Netflix.com were in the region of 26.6 million unique visitors opposed to Hulu who received 20.2 million.
The data gets even stranger when you look at the date Netflix had their biggest jump in visitor time on site. That date was September, 2011, which just happened to be the date that Netflix hit customers who both streamed and rented dvd’s with a big subscription price rise.
Yet that date also coincided with visitor time on site rising from 820 million minutes to 1.03 billion. Considering Netflix are keen to move to a streaming only service, it seems the move may have actually had the desired effect.
For all the subsequent damage to Netflix’s brand and stock, the move did seemingly have the desired effect of boosting viewership of the streaming service.
But now is an important time for Netflix as the months since the rise have been flatlining. So if Netflix want to make a success of their streaming service and move customers from DVD rental to online movies, that number will need to start rising again.
