Verizon May Launch Internet TV Service
Verizon Communications are looking at launching a streaming service, delivering older movies and shows via the Web and creating another online service in the fight for digital viewers.
The phone company are said to be in discussions with potential partners about the snew service, which could be streaming in early 2012 and would be available to some 85 million US households. The company would target customers that are outside of Verizons existing five million subscribers for FiOS phone, Internet and TV customers, according to a Reuters report.
The content that would be on offer is said to be non-premium and would consist of packages of older, classic and cult programming.
If the subscription package is launched it would mean that Verizon join a host of other big names that are entering the lucrative online streaming market. And more Hollywood studios and TV networks are now happy to sell non-exclusive streaming rights to anyone.
Speaking at a media conference on Tuesday, CBS chief executive, Leslie Moonves said, “We’re happy to sell you our content. We have the ability, especially today, to be open to whomever wants to get into the space, whether it’s Apple or Google.”
He maintained that CBS will not agree any exclusive licensing deals saying, “We’re not going to cut ourselves off with one partner.”
A Verizon spokesman declined to comment.
