New TV iPad App From Cablevision
Apps, glorious TV apps, they keep coming to iPad from cable companies right now. And the latest company to get one released is Cablevision Systems Corp, who are launching an app that allows Optimum subscribers to watch cable on their iPad at home.
The app will be available to the 3 million plus customers of Cablevision and allows them to view over 300 TV channels. They can also see 2,000 plus video on-demand streams, DVR programming, channel guides, parental controls and closed captioning. The system uses Cablevision’s digital cable television network to deliver programing to the iPad, so customers do not need to have Internet access on their devices to use the app.
Sounds familiar? Sure does, as a similar app was released by Time Warner in March. Then it hit problems from the content providers last week. After some cease and desist threats they had to remove Fox, Viacom and Discovery channels from the app.
However, Cablevision have their bases covered (at least they think), and their version differs in a couple of ways. First it does not use the internet as such but rather their Digital Cable network. Although that may not be seen quite so different by some. In a press release they say:- “customers do not need to have Internet access to use the Optimum App for iPad.”
And secondly, the iPad service is marketed as just another tv in the house. They say that the app:- “allows the iPad to function as a television, delivering…our cable television service to a display device in the home. It gives our customers the additional flexibility and convenience of watching television throughout the home, in places where set-top boxes might not be ideal or even practical, like the kitchen, bathroom or work room. This is the future of Advanced Digital Cable televisions served with virtual set-top boxes, and just one of many digital displays we are going to be serving through a variety of applications.”
The question is, how long before Cablevision get into hot water from content providers who are looking for additional payment to allow streaming rights?
