The iPhone and iPad are already awash with tv apps and movie streams, but you can never get enough of a good thing and Dish Network seems to agree. In the upcoming next few months Dish Network, the satellite-TV provider has plans that will enable its subscriber’s to use their mobile devices as portable TVs.

This new development, currently set for a September launch, will be built into the Dish’s current swathe of free applications developed to remotely control the company’s high-end set-top boxes using Apple’s devices. BlackBerry and Android apps are said to be on the cards.

Dish Network’s app joins a growing list of video streaming apps from the big name media companies, including Netflix, Hulu and ABC, attempting to grab the attention of consumers who have cut the rope from cable subscription and satellite TV plans.

However, Dish is unique in that it relies on consumer’s current TV subscriptions and set-top boxes to work. The Dish application will connect over the Internet to the set-top box at home that’s been specially made or modified to work with technology from Slingbox, a unit of Echostar, Dish’s sister company that operates satellites and makes set-top boxes. Consumers can either buy a Slingbox setup for up to $300, or buy a higher-end high-definition set-top box from Dish with the technology built in.

Not everything is perfect, however. If say one person is at home watching, “30 Rock,” and someone else is on the road accessing the set-top box over the Internet, Dish said they will be stuck with whatever is being watched from home. If they want to watch, say, “MythBusters” instead, a special set-top box with functionality to watch or record two channels at once is required.

There are potential conflicts though, Dish said for those who have the right hardware and can’t wait to watch live TV on their iPhones and iPads now, the Slingbox Mobile app is available.
