Music fans in the UK will be familiar with the BBC pop music show ‘Top of the Pops’. The show had a cult following but was killed off in 2006. Fans will be pleased to hear that the show, or a version of it, is being revived – on the web.

Listeners to the BBC Radio 1 Official Chart show will be able to watch the final top ten acts in a Top of the Pops fashion.

The new version of the show beginning February 26 will have the familiar format of old, a mixture of live performances, videos, exclusive tracks and interviews with hitmakers of the day.

The new show will incorporate Facebook and Twitter interaction, and is the first time that the BBC has shown the top ten on video other than radio since the axing of Top Of The Pops after a 42 year run.

Presenters of the show will be Reggie Yates who currently presents the radio one chart show and said, “It’s so exciting that Chart Show listeners can now become Chart Show viewers. For the first time fans will be able to see all the antics and interviews that take place each week on the show in the run up to announcing the No.1 single as well as being able to watch the music videos from the Top 10 artists.”

Speaking about the new show, Ben Cooper, Controller of BBC Radio 1, commented, “This is the Chart Show for the 21st century. I’m very excited about this innovation. Young people will be logging on to listen, watch and take part in the show. I hope that this will be to our young listeners what listening to the chart and waiting to record your favourite pop songs was for another generation.”

The original Top of the Pops had it’s golden years in the 70′s when it got around 19 million viewers every week. The show went through a number of revamps, and was then moved from BBC1 to BBC2 but viewer numbers dropped to an all time low of around 1 million viewers.

The shows demise coincided with the arrival of 24-hour music channels such as MTV, and the arrival of downloads on the internet and Youtube.

If the show is an online success then it is said that the show may make a return to traditional TV.
