Top Gear Gets Stateside Season Two
History are said to have given the ’green light’ to a second season of the US remake of hit British motoring series Top Gear. The new series, based heavily on the format of the BBC show which has been taken around the world, first aired in November, and has since recorded the youngest average audience for a series in the history of the History Channel.
Production for the second series of Top Gear, in co-operation with BBC Worldwide Productions, will begin this spring. All three of the show’s hosts will return, including comedian Adam Ferrara, rally/drift racer Tanner Foust, and professional racing analyst Rutledge Wood. The executive producers of the show are John Hesling and History Channel’s Russ McCarroll.
The series follows the ‘modern’ British format (an original, more factual version ran between 1977-2001, before a relaunch in 2002 to the version it is in today around the world), and features special challenges based on cars, extreme stunts, celebrity interviews (known in America as ‘Big Star, Small Car’), and regular car reviews, with speed test driving done by anonymous racer ‘The Stig’.
The American version has gotten one of the best approvals possible, from the UK series’ main presenter (and co-pitcher of the 2002 format) Jeremy Clarkson (who presents the show with Richard Hammond and James May (the three of them had themselves failed an audition to host the US version due to making too many references to English pop culture in their clips)), who said that they were ‘anxious’ beforehand about seeing an American version of the show. Clarkson said of the series: ”We needn’t have worried because Top Gear is clearly in safe hands, even if they do insist on speaking in those stupid accents.”
He also referred to his experiences of watching the format take place in America: “Watching an episode from series 1 with Richard and James, we found ourselves in a genuinely heated debate about which of the presenters’ cars was best. We were just three ordinary chaps watching a car show and loving it, which is exactly what Top Gear should be. Bring on series 2.”
