Tivo the king of the DVR world has had a pretty tough time of late, but with the new Tivo Premier they are planning to become the internet tv box just like they were the DVR player of the last decade. The problem is that the competition for this market is a whole lot tougher.

Tivo were at the forefront of the dvr and now with their new box of goodies plan to be on the forefront of internet tv. The new premier enables users to bring content from cable, broadcast tv and of course the web.

Senior VP of Tivo, Joe Miller is calling their new device the “Google of television.”  Big words, but based on the premise that the Tivo makes the job of watching live tv, recording shows, streaming and downloading easy peasy.

The set-top box that starts at $299 plus subscription charges also lets you find releated videos on YouTube and allows you to listen to the soundtrack by using a music site. And, Miller says, it will play on your TV with one box, one set of wires and one remote control.

The problem for Tivo though is that only about 1.5 million out of the existing 30 million DVR’s in use in the US are Tivo, and that’s a hard reality for TiVo to face when they essentially invented the device. Although the DVR is a hugely popular device, TiVo has found it hard to find new customers as now most cable and satellite companies have introduced their own dvr devices. They also posted a massive $10 million loss in Q4 2009.

The TiVo Premiere also has stiff competition from Roku, a VUDU, a Slingbox amongst others that all essentially do the same thing. And of course we have the mighty Google coming around the corner with its own Google of TV.
